Who can I get to repair? (and a gripe about new Nokia charger!)

This is a two part thread - first asking who can repair my N95 and secondly to bitch about the poxy tiny AC adapter jack which is partly the cause of my problem.

In a nutshell, I've broken a small bit of plastic off the socket on the phone where you insert the charger. Example:

This is a quick drawing of how it looks as you look at the bottom of the phone, at the socket.

The white line represents the crack. The whole left piece has come away.

How did this occur? One of two ways or a combination of both, 1) through falling onto carpeted floor from a low height whilst on charge 2) through using incar charger and a universal Nokia cradle.

My question is, who can I ask to repair this? I've had the phone only a couple of months. I'm with 02. Is this something either Nokia or 02 would repair or exchange respectively? Or is this accidental damage and therefore not covered by standard guarantees, and I'll have to pay to have it fixed? If the latter, is it a job for Nokia i.e. I'd have to send the phone to them?

Thanks in advance 😉

Onto my gripe - the new small Nokia charger jack. Worst idea ever. I can't be the only one that's had them get bent? It doesn't take much to bend them at all. My actual charger that came with the phone has bent and a big to small adapter has also bent!

If you tell them you droppped it I dont think you will get much sympathy (or anything else).

For what its worth, Ive bent the same size pin on my charger for my old 6233. I just bought an adaptor which fits the old style nokia chargers, to the new ones.

Now I have many potential chargers everywhere.

Yeah I figured that unfortunately. My only slim glimmer of hope is to complain about the charger jack being partly the cause!

That aside though, if I were to pay to have it repaired, is it a Nokia service center I should approach?

Probably the best place to go. I have no idea what sort of price they would charge you, and also be prepared to have a wait of upto 4 weeks.

One other option is to buy a knackered one off ebay and replace it. However, I cannot say how easy that is and wouldnt recommend it unless your very confidnt you can do it.

Nokia have a service center locator on the webby, and you could pop into one to get a quote.

If its just the outer casing around the charger socket that is damaged I'd recommend buying new housing (which can be purchased in sections, ie front/back etc). I saw something yesterday about Nokia having released their own official OEM housing that can be purchased from many third party suppliers.

Fitting it should be a piece of cake, so I'd suggest getting a quote for repair and comparing it against fixing it yourself.

If it isn't the housing, sorry for wasting your time. ^_^'

Good luck.

Thanks guys. I think I'll get a quote from a Nokia Service Center.

I'm not sure whether its part of the casing or an internal component as part of the circuit board.

Well I e-mailed my local service center the following e-mail:

Dear sir/madam

Would it be possible to get a rough price quotation on the repair of my Nokia N95. The fault is easy to describe.

Basically, a small piece of plastic has broken away from the socket where you insert the AC adapter jack.

As you look at the bottom of the Nokia N95 it looks like this:

The yellow circle representing the pin within the socket the adapter plugs onto, the black circle is the socket itself, and the dark grey square is the outer surround. The white line through it represents the crack, and the left hand piece has come away.

I'm not sure if this is part of the casing or a component fixed to the circuit board.

I've had the phone only a few months, and despite the cause of this fault, in my opinion, being caused partly by the new ridiculously small Nokia adapter jack, I doubt it'll be covered by Nokia's warranty. Briefly, I believe the fault developed over the last few months, whilst the charger has been inserted either in car or at home, knocked or fallen the jack on the adapter itself has bent putting strain on the piece described above causing it to eventually crack. The older Nokia adapter jack was much more robust. But anyway, I digress.

I'd be grateful if you could provide me with a rough quotation.

And rather interestingly, I received this reply:

Hi Chris

I think this repair will be covered by Nokia's warranty as we have had a similar case recently

Are you in Northampton? If so could you pop the phone into our shop at 2 College St Mews, Northampton, NN1 2QF and Im sure we can sort it out for you

Our telephone number is 01604 603009

Many thanks

I say interestingly because of the statement in bold above - I'm obviously not the only person this has happened to!

I had a similar problem with my first N95. It would seem that the power jack was not properly supported/attached to the internal circuit board and this caused location failure! I got an immediate replacement!😊 😊
