Enabling tkip for access to Eduroam

6 replies · 7,009 views · Started 28 August 2007

Been trying to access eduroam wifi at work with my N95, but I need to enable tkip.

Although tkip is mentioned on page 124 of manual, there seems to be no option within phone settings to enable it.

Anyone know how to do this?

It might be worth knowing TKIP is a variation of WPA. Have a look at the different options under WPA to see if TKIP is present.

No where to be seen despite the manual mentioning it.

I will looks again, as I may have missed something. :con?

First: TKIP isn't a variation of WPA, it's an encryption protocoll used by WPA

Second: No need to look for the setting....

As long as WLAN Security Mode on N95 is set to "WPA/WPA2" it will use TKIP (or AES if it's a network running WPA2+AES) since it's a protocol which is used by WPA.

If you set it to "WPA2 only" it will only allow AES or TKIP+AES encrypted networks since theese are the ones used by WPA2 (not 100% sure about this since I haven't bothered to test it out).

A requirement for getting any of the above working is of course that you know the networks PSK (PreSharedKey). And of course, you have to make sure that your network isn't running with a MAC address filter (would guess this is quite rarely used in corp.networks..) and that it doesn't use an auth.server. If so, you'll have to change WLAN Sec.Mode to "802.1x".

Eduroam as you may already know is the University Internet service in the UK.

There is no pre shared key as such. It is just a matter of inputting correct username and password.

So far, I have failed miserably to connect using my N95, but can connect without problems using my laptop.

So when you connect using your laptop do you enter your usrname and pw at a website when connecting or in the WLAN settings in your def. IAP on your computer?
If you enter usr & pw at a website you should be able to do it in the same way on N95 (hence start the web browser => select the AP => should be redirected to "login site" where you login...)

I'm guessing that they run either a 802.1x authentication server or WPA with EAP. Either way you then have to select "EAP" under security settings and in addition configure the appropriate EAP plugin with your usrname and pw.

I'm out of ideas... :con?

With my lappy, the username and password is already entered and stored. ( I did the entering and storing)

I think I have sussed it, but won't know until I am back at work on Friday.

Checked manual and phone again.

Despite the manual mentioning tkip on page 124, there is nothing in the phone settings.

However, I now suspect I must enter the password in the pre shared key area of wpa eap.

I will report back how I get on, but I am now fairly confident that I will achieve a connection on Friday, even if I have to play around with the settings a little more. (Famous last words, and all that!)
