really Slow GPS

Im not sure whether its just the N95, or if ive done something wrong, but basically, its not tracking MY position properly at all. i just went out, when i was there, it still thought i was at home, and then it finally caught up with my position about 20 minutes into it....

now im home, and it still thinks im out?!

am i missing something?
im with O2, on contract, (so dont have t pay for connection AFAIK)
Use network -When needed
Default access point -O2 mobile web/O2Wap
Roaming warning-Off

hmm, someone help pleaseee, also... where can i get more up to date maps? as the maps currently on it dont have the most recent changes that have happened to my area.

EDIT: just changed to correct position now, 30minutes after being here.. wtf!?

i tryed for a while mate mine was rubbish as well easily took just as long even with v12 and assisted gps switched on

ive gone back to my n73 which i just find a better phone,mp3 player because of the battery, sat nav device with external gps as it takes 20secs to 1 min max to connect not 15-30 mins, camera is also nearly as good as n95s

as for maps and latest ones

use nokia map loader its a free download and maps are free iam sure they update them very often 😊

id watch out as well i dont think o2 do a free data tarif yet

iam on o2 35 online and i only get 1mb free and paid an extra 4 pound for 2 more mb

they charge 3 pound per mb usaully

if you were to download the whole uk map via o2 gps it would cost around 300 uk pounds

if o2 dont compete with voda and t mobiles free data tariffs ill be off at the end of mine 😊 saying that i do get loads of mins and txts but 3 pound a mb is extorinate

nice1

hmm ok, cheers m8

but is connecting to the GPS etc classed as downloading to them? so im not likely to be charged for it?
not suree

no gps is fine as long as you download the maps yourself and go into settings and turn network to never

otherwise it is automatically connecting to o2 gprs for data streaming as you drive

which will cost you

so turn network to never in nokia map settings and download your maps with nokia map loader

It's been mentioned a thousand times in this forum so why not 1001;
1. Firmware version? 12.x has support for A-GPS, 11.x does not. A-GPS = Quick fix.
2. Still with firmware 12.x it's not enough to simply enable it, you have to make sure that you have selected an IAP for it in the settings otherwise it will not connect.
3. About the "where am I on the map..."; make sure you have pushed the "GPS position" key in Nokia Maps (from what I can remember it's the upper right key if you're using the "native" version. If you have upgraded to any of the 1.x versions the key mapping for "GPS pos." has been changed to "0" numeric key.

In addition: sure you have a fix? If the "Sat.dish" in lower right has an "X" = no fix. If "😉)" = fix (in newer version of N.Maps it's replaced by "ooo" which is either filled green = fix or flashing orange = no fix.

i do switch agps on still takes ages rubbish gps in n95 simple as othewrwise it wouldnt even need the internet connection to push it in the right direction 😊 if you get what i mean

why not just put a half decent gps in there

just tryed again from cold start took 12-14 mins to connect with agps enabled my bluetooth gps was up and running in 52 seconds lol how bad is that

i know what ill be using

The N95, being a convergence device, isn't likely to be better than dedicated devices; it's GPS isn't as good as a dedicated GPS, its camera isn't as good as a dedicated camera, its media playback isn't as good as a dedicated player. Especially because all these things are competing for space and battery power on a handheld device. So it's not really surprising that an external GPS is better - the hope is that the N95 is good enough. With the GPS, it's more questionable than most features, though.

If its taking 10 mins+ to get a fix even with AGPS on, Id take it back to where you got it from. Thats far too long, and many on the forums report that they get a lock in under a minute with AGPS on.

Kinda points to a fault. The GPS unit inside is said to be a equivalent to a sirf2 LP (low power). While not as good as a sirf3, they shouldnt be that bad.

Put a regular GPS unit in there and you wouldnt see any battery life at all.

ok cheers guys
to superswede, i have searched, and found nothing that i havent already done. i think im just expecting too much.
im trying to use nokia maploader now, and 'delete maps from storage' has been running for about half an hour now, wtf?!

also, i wana upgrade to v12, as im on a v11 at the mo, just wondering if you guys can give me a link to how to do it? i cant remember how i did it with my n80, and cant seem to find it on a search
thanks

My guess is that you have a faulty device then since mine is getting a fix/lock in less than 15 sec everytime since I've enabled A-GPS. In most places I even get a lock from inside a building as long as I'm located near a window.

I have both a TT Sirfstar II and TT Sirfstar III bluetooth GPS and since the 12.x upgrade it's the N95 GPS works just as well (..in my opinion...). Without A-GPS enabled it's another story but hey, how cares what type of technology it's using as long as it shows your position... 😉

Well that explains it. I also had much trouble with looooong fix times when I was on 11.x firmware. The 12.x firmware with "A-GPS" support makes all the difference.
If you don't have a branded device all have to do to upgrade it, is to install Nokia Software Updater (NSU) on your PC, connect the phone and follow the steps. If it says "No update available..." you have a branded phone and you need to debrand it to a generic version (...like "EURO1"😉 in order to get 12.x.
There are lots of post in this forum regarding debranding so do a simple "Search..." (..and also have a look at the sticky thread "Nokia N95 Product codes" in this forum for the correct "EURO1" code to use).

nice one mate, thanks

You have any idea if changing product code and updating firmware wil void my warrantee?

superswede - i've recently encountered a problem where it takes ages to lock on to my position. its very weird because it was working fine all this while (recently updated nokia maps, and updated map loader) and it was still working fine after the upgrade.

yesterday morning i used my gps to navigate to work and it locked on in about a minute, as usual. but after work i needed to go to a friends place and i really did not know how to get there. i had to wait in my car for about 15mins and it still did not lock on. i even tried rebooting the phone several times but still no luck. ironically, after using the printed city map i had in my car and found my friend's place, i finally got a fix!

im on v12, unbranded (euro1 now) and i have the latest nokia maps/map loader. agps is turned on. encountered something like this before? any suggestions what might be the problem?

thanks!

The more you use the GPS, the faster it locks on. If I am in the vicinity (1km radius) of which the GPS has tracked before, it takes LESS THAN ONE minute to lock on without fail. For new locations I usually get a lock in at most 2 minutes. I am using V11.

Remember you have to allow internet access for AGPS to work!
It only uses a few kbs of data, but, you would get it downloading the maps and if you don't have a data package it could be costly on o2!

With all the searching you missed that AGPS is only on v.12 while you were still on v.11?
If you get v.12 your probs are solved. Let's hope😊

Try using Route66 or Navigon, you may find that the GPS works much better with other Software, I certainly did.

Cheers

Hi
I have a version 12 Euro Nokia N95
I have Nokia Maps Version 1.2 wk38 b01 OpenGL LM MN
Also
TeleAtlas
Nateq
Nav2
After 20mins standing outside still no fix.
It thinks im in a place 200 miles away where i was last week

I have the option to use network selected, but i can't see the option for assisted GPS

Also more annoying is that my husband has the same phone (also version 12) and when we stand together he gets a fix instantly
What am i missing I checked that we had the same settings, the only difference is his was from Vodafone and mine was from O2

Heeeeeeeeelp

I found (pre-v12) that when moving a GPS fix could take ages, possibly anything up to half an hour.
with v12 firmware (A-GPS on), i find a lock is almost instant, and works even inside or in my pocket.
Got a few oddities in sport tracking data, like claiming i was cycling at 50+ MPH, or walking at 15ish.
