Okay so like a few of you have done, I have also bricked my N95 through the V12 firmware update and I am still in the process of sending my phone to Nokia to have them reflash it. I followed the given instructions extremely carefully but the update still failed.
I just want some information from the people who have also bricked their phone as well as information from people who updated without any problem. I am determined to find out what the cause of the problem is so in a future firmware update, it doesn't happen again.
What operating system were you running? What version of symbian were you updating from? What precautions did you take prior to installation?
Here is my info if anyone was wondering.
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate
Updating from V10 to V12
Precautions, made sure phone was charged...hell was even plugged into the wall.
This is my first Nokia phone (and first phone that I have blown $600+ on for that matter) and it has left a VERY bitter taste in my mouth. I certainly hope this isn't a problem on Nokia's end. For the record, I only had the phone for a full 36 hours before all hell came crashing down.
Just a little clarification, my phone turns on and stay on a blank black screen with the back light constantly on. the keypad stays lit and nothing happens.
I am suspecting the problem to be either windows vista or updating from V10 to V12.
Thanks for reading!
EEEK!!
I'm kind of glad that my nokia software updater doesn't seem to work. I didn't realise this was such a common problem
have you tried holding down the green + 3 + * keys while switching it on .. (its unlikely .. but heck worth a try)
Which set of instructions were you following?
Yes vista is a bit of a problem... but not with the latest PC Suite/drivers.
Did you have any firewall or antivirus software running?
Finally was it completely new or did you have some settings on it before trying the update?
Best of Luck!😊

Apparently you have to run NSU in XP Cmpatibility mode if you are on Vista.

i've tried the 3 combination keys, no luck there.
i was following the instructions on the Nokia website
I actually did not even think about updating the PC suite, I ran what ever came on the disk
I did not have any firewalls running, but I had Symantec AV running
Not sure what you mean with the last question. I bough the phone brand new, OEM unbranded. I added contacts and added a few apps and that was it.
i done my orange one last night (before i try my voda) and i done this
1 use nss to change the product code to 0534841
2 run nokia software updater
3 upgrade from 11 to 12.
my orange phone works perfectly.
i used this site here

its a great guide

Nope, you don't, it works normally.

AFAIK Nokia Software Updater won't run unless you have the latest version.
I had this problem with an N80 and just ran the NSU again two or three times and eventually it went through OK.
When the NSU runs it seems to switch the phone into a different mode called "BB5 loader" or similar. I think that's what your phone is stuck in.
For the reference of others, I suspect the key is, will your PC recognise the phone at all when it is plugged in?
The PC will not read the phone when it turns. I've checked to see if it detected something called a BB5 loader but its like nothing was plugged in at all. I've tried different USB ports as well. For the record, I was not connected to a hub. I will be sending my phone in this afternoon to Nokia.
Just a follow up, Nokia finally received my phone today. If they still haven't shipped it out 10 days later, I'm going to start hassling them about it.
Wow, I checked my repair status a few days ago and they have already shipped the repaired phone. It should be at my door step soon.
I'm on Vista Home Premium and had to run NSS is XP compatibility mode for it to work. Other than that, no problems.
I did one try to flash a phone that wasn't charged to NSU's liking and it refused to work, saying the battery was too low, and told me to either charge it or plug it in first. Personally, I'd avoid flashing a mains connected phone that's not on a surge protector.
I don't think it matters what version of PC Suite is installed as NSU is essentially a stand alone application, though I would recommend rebooting the computer before a flash if a new version of NSU has just installed as I've found it to be a bit 'funny' otherwise.
If I had to guess what caused this bricking, I'd say it was flashing it through the USB hub. I'd say always use a direct USB connection for such a sensitive operation.
I used a direct USB connection. I don't even have a hub.
I also just bricked my N95.
OS: windows XP, latest updates
Update: V11 to V12
Nokia software updater: v1.4.0en
followed all instructions. Phone was fully charged so I did not plug it in for power.
peculiar detail: Although I selected "PC suite" mode on the phone when plugging in the USB cable, I still got the standard popup window on the PC for usb storage devices, which I just closed.
The problem may have been caused by the laptop going to sleep mode, although I'm not sure whether this happened during or after the failed update. If this is the problem, then nokia needs to fix the software updater so that it vetoes sleep mode!
The phone no longer gives any signs of life now. Earlier it still showed the blank screen with "Nokia" on it, but now pressing the power-on button no longer has any effect.
Got my phone back and restored everything. Its working great now. Thanks for all the feedback. I think the problem was that the original version of PC suite (that comes on the disk) had some bugs in it. It basically worked for everything EXCEPT the firmware update.
