GPS Question (Simple!)

Hi guys, love this site, just got a question about gps

Does it cost to use the maps as it asks for network usage?

And what selection should i choose? thanks

To use GPS, it does not cost money unless you allow it to use network other than a WLAN.

Use your GPS but don't allow it to access any network.

If you need more maps, use maploader software from your home pc and load it on the phone that way.

hi,

You might also want to turn off A-GPS (assisted GPS), which uses a data network to get some preprocessed data to speed up the GPS locking.

You can set this up by going to:

TOOLS -> SETTINGS -> GENERAL -> POSITIONING -> POSITIONING METHODS

and just uncheck "Assisted GPS". Note this positioning method has only been introduced with the latest firmware. So this post is irrelevant if you have an older firmware.

ut.

2 Questions:

I got the map pre-installed on the memory card, so why does it search for a network connection if I already have maps?

If I subscribe to the navigation package from Nokia is that just a one-off payment and the use of the GPS is free thereafter? Or do I incur data charges above and beyond the Nokia payment?

It asks for a network connection to obtain any other information such as updates, points of interest, point to point calculations etc. Otherwise you will just be running off the data supplied by the maps you have loaded on your memory card which is sufficient enough.

Again, using GPS itself is free. Using network features over WAP and the A-gps features may incur seperate data charges through your wireless service provider.

I'm not familiar with Nokia's navigation package. I use my GPS without allowing it to access any network and I have A-gps disabled. I've had no problems!
