N95 and Orange.

Hi,

Currently on orange with an N80. Due for an upgrade and want
an N95. Orange doesn't list WIFI as a feature for the N95 but O2 does.

Have orange disabled wifi on their phones? Bit of a deal breaker that one!

Cheers,
Nick.

All N95s have 802.11 b and g (commonly known as Wi-Fi).

Orange's firmware lacks some of the functions needed for Voice over IP calls (commonly known as Internet or Wi-Fi calls).

Unless you're set on making VoIP calls, the Orange phone will be fine, although many forum members have removed the Orange firmware and replaced it with a generic one. Search the forum for more details.

I have also got orange and it seem top not have voip or voice call optione.how can I update to generic firmware.

Will be worth doing so? what are the pros and cons ?

I have a N95 on Orange and it does have WIFI. works very well, better than N80.

Orange have taken VOIP off the phone so internet calling not possible unless you flash generic firmware like me. I installed Gizmo VOIP and can make calls to my family in USA for next to nothing!!

so you are saying rather than just updating the firmware on the phone install the gizmo voip ? Does gizmo voip let you call anywhere in the world?

Whats the quality like and where can it be downloaded from? plz dont mind question I am newbie.

Sorry, I'll be clear - You will need to upgrade new firmware then install Gizmo Voip. Gizmo quality is good for me, if you need more info just go to gizmovoip . com

thanks do you know where I can get the latest firmwares? is it done directly from nokia site ? i suppose it will not matter if it was ornage phone or by any other network or will it?

also just notoiced its not free to use gizmo voip one has to buy credits make calls i guess?

If you search these forums you will find the info but basically you change the product code of your phone using NSS (its free to download) then run the nokia software updater software in PC Suite (again free to download) and you'll have a generic unbranded phone. Please make a backup of you data and stuff first because it will wipe the phone like the day you took it out the box!!!

so this means i will need to input the GPRS settings from the scratch. Or if I got a sim update from orange it will automatically load gprs settings on the phone.

My N95 sorted itself out after upgrade. I restored my data using Nokia PC Suite (backed up BEFORE doing upgrade) and all data, GPRS settings were on the phone. You will also find a program called "settings wizard" in the phone's menu which will set the GPRS settings for you! Either way its not hard to get them back!

so you reckon new firmware will make a difference to the efficiency of the phone ? shal we download the firmware from nokia site?

I don't think it speeds the phone up very much but it does give you Internet calling and if you use the SAT NAV in the N95 its adds AGPS which helps give a quicker lock on you position. My n95 now locks on in about 12 - 15 seconds. It used to take 60 seconds or more before. If you read the stickys at the top of this forum you can see all the improvements made by upgrading to V12 of the firmware.

Nokia Software Updater will download the firmware file for you.

Wicked response I like it..well I would have to try it all at night to see how it make a difference.

i was also having problems accessing the internet using wifi at home. cant remeber the error message. I will get back once i have the error message.
