When Next Gen N-Gage arrives, where do indie S60 games go?

The Next Gen N-Gage platform is a couple of months away from launching, but there are already games from independent developers available for Next Gen N-Gage compatible phones. All About N-Gage wonders what will happen to these indie games when the new N-Gage platform goes live and suggests how indie developers and N-Gage might be suit one another.

As a long-suffering N-Gage owner I always wondered why the great indie games didn't get (more) coverage on official n-gage websites and in magazines. Just because the official releases were "official" was in no way a guarantee for quality just like a game being unofficial does not automatically mean it has to be any worse. Remember that a couple of Sega releases were canned at the last minute for not meeting quality standards. I hope that all N-Gage owners tried Darxide EMP and Stuntcar Extreme but I'm sure due to lack of awareness it will not have been the case. These two games were definitely as good as (or better than) many official releases.

I hope the indie producers keep up the good work and we can still play great games regardless of what Nokia do or exactly which Nokia phones the new N-Gage officially supports.

PS If you have never tried Rainbow Jek by Fathammer you should do so NOW! It is the dogs.....

One good comparison is the original N-Gage version of Puzzle Bobble and the unofficial freeware indie version Frozen Bubble (which was also available for the original N-Gage). Most people who play both agree Frozen Bubble is the better game.

Exactly, if those had been promoted as official N-Gage games a lot more people might have bought them. But I don't think 95% of N-Gage owners even knew that S60 games existed.

And Darxide and Stuntcar Extreme were from very respected professional developers, they had lots of experience in making games people wanted to buy.

Therefore, the next generation of N-Gage games will not have an independent development of the game to be published?
