Does anyone know why I can't seem to use a standard USB lead to connect Z8 to computer? It seems only the one that comes with it works.
Same goes for 5v chargers - and this is annoying as I can't use car charger anymore grrrrrr
It's as if they've use a slightly different pinout or reversed the polarity or something!
Having posted that question I think I may have found the answer...
It's all about pin X!! No doubt similar system used on Z8 as on their other phones...

Why can't Motorola just be normal like anyone else?! ...time for a trip to maplin and some soldering :] :]
One of us must be off, and if it's me I'm glad. 😊 My Z8 is happy with any cable laying around and all chargers and cigar lighter cords left over from my V3i.
Mine charges fine with any USB cable, have got a random spare i leave in work to charge it up there, never had any problems.
USB - Mini Usb data cables should work fine - I use several branded/unbranded ones for testing and they all work OK. Might be an issue with that one you have - maybe it's for another device that uses specific grounding/pins, etc.
Other possibility is that the power was from a USB HUB, as they can drop the current/kill a port if it was drawing too much power. That is a Windows safety thing, as is supposed to happen. Maybe try a powered USB hub if that is the case.
As for chargers, then NO, they should not really work. There are safety measures inside them that the phone looks for, so as not to connect a non Motorola one to prevent possible damage/fire/etc - I think i'd rather have an official charger than risk it for the sake of a few pounds...
