Nokia N95 HSDPA and internet surfing on laptop

28 replies · 14,625 views · Started 15 September 2007

Hi,

Can anybody please confirm how N95 performs when you use it as modem for your laptop on T-mobile Web n walk tariff when its using 3.5G (HSDPA) network.

I hav an Xda exec but thinking of buying N95 purely for HSDPA option and any comments would be welcome.

Thanks in advance

It's first rate! Last check I got a 1.4 mbitsps connection and it is the single reason that I got the N95.
If you have 3.5G in your area, go for it!

Yup, I can support all of that. I just got an N95 on T-Mobile Flext35 with Web 'n Walk Plus. I managed 1116Kbps download, 280Kbps upload and a Ping time of 173ms which aint half bad 😊

If you're using the N95 on a Mac you'll need the driver from Nokia's website.

Yep! It is MIGHTILY impressive - my average speeds is 130kps here or there and it's more reliable than most ISPs I've ever come across!

BUT

And yes there is a but. Certain things are blocked like Msn messenger, connecting to an FTP server but I have heard if you opt for a higher download tariff the restrictions on these services are lifted!

I've just moved and waiting for Virgin Cable to install their 20mb broadband but you know, I would be quite happy with this for a long time!😎

:icon4: Remember to plug in your charger at the same time though - it drinks the power like a momma!

Windows live messanger now works on N95.

stephanbee wrote:Yes, but you can't connect to Windows live messenger on your laptop, by that I mean the REAL version

Yes, that is true. I have not been able to ascertain why.

like everyone has said, it's superfast and very cool, one of the drawbacks is the battery drain, but if you're on full charge your laptop will run out before the device thats for sure 😊

Can any T-Mobile users confirm that an N95 will provide 3G connectivity to a laptop when you're subscribed to Web'n'Walk, not just Web'n'Walk plus?

I don't expect I'll do it very often but it might be handy to know it's possible.

I'm about to jump ship to T-Mobile from Voda, who seem clueless about data.

Thanks

Indeed it works. I only have PAYG, but from time to time I use the one pound deal that allows you to surf unlimited from a day. You can use N95 as a modem and connect from your laptop.

Hi, apologises if this is the wrong place to ask, i came across this thread when trying to get messenger to work via webnwalk.

I am using webnwalk on my laptop through a K750i (bluetooth), i have no subscription but just connect at max 1 a day. I only get dialup speeds of 3-5kb. Is the reason for this because ive not subscribed to a monthly service or because the mobile is crap?

Many thanks in advance.

The latter - your phone is GSM only, not 3G/HSDPA, so it can only connect using GPRS, which is about as fast as an old 56k dialup modem. If you had a 3G phone, then it would be several times faster (but I don't think it would be up to HSDPA speeds, as I don't think the non-subscription service on T-Mobile supports this?).

Also, I'm not sure if you're technically supposed to use IM services on anything other than Web'n'Walk Plus or Max.

New mobile time then 😊 i dont think im supposed to use a laptop fullstop lol. Im not downloading files though, im only using 6mb an hour ish surfing.

So i need a HSDPA enabled phone, im not really into mobiles im a computer geek, so ill have to do some reading now.

Thank you!

The 3g/hsdpa service is available on all t-mobile connections regardless.

Ah, ok. I thought I'd read that HSDPA was only available on Plus/Max; I know that 3G is available on all services if your handset supports it.

Excellent, im looking at getting a Nokia 6120, it hasn't go wifi which would be nice, but i dont want to spend too much, i never really use my mobile.

my network supports 3.5g but how do i know if i'm on 3.5g or 3g? any icon indicating this?

There is a 3.5g icon - but you need firmware v12 or above to see it.

whatleydude wrote:There is a 3.5g icon - but you need firmware v12 or above to see it.

i've got the latest firmware but there's no 3.5g appearing. should i change a setting somewhere? what is the network that i should use? umts. gsm or dual?

HSDPA can work if it's connected to an UMTS network (Dual will connect to UMTS if available, else GSM); if it's set to GSM only it won't work, and nor will 3G (since UMTS = 3G). However, merely that HSDPA is theoretically supported doesn't necessarily mean that you have HSDPA coverage on your network where you are, since it does require the network upgrading base stations.

I just joined this site looking for some help and spotted this thread and thought i'd clear up a few points regarding some of the previous posts - And hopefully Someone will be able to answer my query :con?

If you not interested in hearing about t-mobile, please skip to the end to see my query, I would appreciate any help you can offer.

I work for T-Mobile tech support (and do know something about data speeds 😉 )

T-Mobile can set which speed a line is getting it is either 2G speeds (dial up) or 3G/HSDPA

3G is upto aprox 390kB / HSDPA is upto 1800kB - although they are starting a nationwide network upgrade to 4500kB - Accounts are only provisioned with this speed when signed up to Web 'n' Walk Plus/Max.

Also, the Cells that are not upgraded, only a 1800kB total bandwidth is available for HSDPA, so if more than one person is connected on HSDPA then that is shared. Currently the non-upgraded cells can only hold 16 people at any time on HSDPA the rest wait on 3G.

Also, you should not be able to use handset as a modem if on the std Web 'n' Walk price plan, although that is not always the case, but if the systems do identify this is happening, then it will be stopped (so make the most of it while it lasts)

This is pretty much the same for all network providers, but t-mobile have got an advantage, as part of the upgrade the t-mobile network is being joined with 3's network. This means t-mobile will have the largest coverage for 3G and strongest signal strengths than any other network and will achieve it quicker and cheaper than having to build more cell site like the others.

And for those Greenies who sign petition after petition against new cell sites. due to duplication, this improvement is being done while still taking down over 900 cells

Now for my Query 🙄

I have an N95 but the drivers from the Nokia PC Suite only set the port to connect at 460kB per second, so it doesnt matter whether im on HSDPA or not, I cannot get the full network speeds.

But some of the posts previous state people are getting much higher speeds than this, could someone please explain how?

Im using the drivers from ver 6.86(i think) as i have not been able to connect at all using ver7.0 (as have many other people). But as far as im aware Nokia have no plans to improve the speed of the N95 drivers, which is a pretty cr@p considering the hype this phone has had.

Has anyone else released unofficial drivers perhaps?

Just reading through this thread, and am interested myself on how to use the N95 8GB with a laptop on 3G connection.

How about do you go connecting up the N95 to the laptop?

bit of an old thread, but you can connect up thru a number of ways.

Have a look at joikuspot ( #59 on this list) for wirelessly connecting, or hook yourself up with your usb cable. Go thru PCSuite to set it up.

if you have nokia pc suite installed, just click the connect to internet button. its 1 click and you are connected. of course you will need the login and password for your carrier. google will find this easily for you.

I find you get the best speeds over a HSPDA > WIFI Bridge, eg, JoikuSpot. I used to have the free version but they seem to have taken that off there site, (its still available on download.com!!) If you havent heard of it, it basically turns symbian phone into a wireless router, whilst connecting over the 3G/HSPDA networks...

Today i purchased the premium edition, a lifetime license for only 11 aint bad!! The premium one also allows you to change the SSID, and set encryption modes / key. Browsing wirelessly on laptop using N95 connection is almost as fast as my home broadband..

hi there,

i've been involved in a discussion about this very topic over on the nokia forums, not sure how its really progressed much further in the last few months but i think i'm in agreement that the rate displayed by windows isnt a true reflection of your download speeds....

http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=connectivity&message.id=16457

as suggested, try using a test site to check your speeds... http://www.speedtest.net/

i've just installed joikuspot premium onto my phone today (15euros for a lifetime licence) which creates a wifi spot for myself and my flatmate to use with my n95 and my contract web n walk as our broadband is down at the moment. this wifi connection is definitely in excess of the usb cable speed so you may want to consider this option?

this also brings me on to your statement about t-mobiles downloads being limited or blocked if detected, i don't seem to have ever experienced any limits on my contract when using my phone as my laptops modem when i've been without my home broadband connection.... i've always wondered whether blocking was carried out by yourselves or not.

good luck with any progress!
