IR Remote???

Anyone heard of any Infrared remote control software for the n95??? I would ideally want to use it to trigger my nikon d70 camera to take time lapse and long exposure pictures...
I found an old remote program called OmniRemote for palmtop which seems ideal (cant post link due to n00b status 😊

Can windows programs be converted to run at all??
Nikon make a remote control themselves but only computer based....

anything similar???

cheers

hi,

nothing yet that I know of...

I remember using OmniRemote when I had a palm, but this is unfortunately not compatible with the Symbian OS.

Same goes for windows apps, these will just not work on the Symbian OS.

Your best bet is to wait for Psiloc IR Remote which is said to be in the process of being ported over to Symbian OS v9.x or aka S60v3.

Although if my memory serves me correctly, this wait has been going on for a long time...

more details here: (note this version is not compatible with your phone)

And as a little side note, the IR on mobile phones are really not that powerful, meaning they can't send the IR signal very far, kinda defeating the purpose of their use as universal remotes. If you have to be 10 cms away from the receiver, might as well use the buttons 😊.

hmm cant really believe this, as my old nokia 7650 with psiolic IRremote worked in pubs etc up to about 20ft away.

now i would agree they must be less powerful than proper remotes... but 10cm??

Thanks for info,

maybe a bit of an ask, shame tho as that would be very slick!!

still getting my head round these different OS and things so very pleased of clarifications,
cheers

Ok so I exaggerated a little.... thanks for clearing things up though GazP 😊
20ft is pretty darn good really, ~6meters. Now we just need the app to come out...

Found this info on some other site, I would post a link to the site, but its not exactly a legal site 😊

take with pinch of salt as usual:

"I just came back from vacation, on my way back i stopped over in Warsaw to visit family and having an n80, me and one of my older cousins started talking about the Symbian platform... ended up he works at Psiloc and develops software mainly for companies in UK, France, Germany and NL, and not strictly for mobile phones, but also for gps devices, laptops and cars. From what he said, IR Remote is not as easy to dev as it used to be under older symbian versions. The new hardware in the modern Nokia phones is still new for most software developers to understand, and even some engineers are having a tough time to work around the changes. Also the new S60 v3 has so many restrictions in respect to software to hardware management that it had rendered alot of problems for the company this year [lets feel sorry for them now].

He showed me a somewhat working version, an alpha build of the new IR remote and explained why it's hard to have it developed for distribution. The modern Infra-Red adapter in most of Nokia N and E series handsets has a variable wavelength, meaning that it is designed and built for data transfer rather than remote control. The variable wavelength is good for syncing and transferring media from your handset to another or a laptop, but when it comes to sending a static signal, it will not comply and eventually throws out other values, causing the remote to send something like 5-657 + tv-video instead of just 5. He showed me with a Grundig brand tv by what he meant, and it was as fucked as he said. It ended up turning off the tv, then turning it on just like that, from one excecution.

The software is still unstable and there are always workarounds, which is what the IR remote team is working on every day, believe it. So stop asking questions on when it's going to come out, because nobody knows, not even the developers.

I would love to show you pics, but he was pretty straight forward on that note. From what I can describe, it basically looked newer, more functions, virtual remotes(original layout of specific remotes from sony, panasonic, Sharp and LG just to name a few[all supporting new HD tvs])

All we can do now is hope, wait and shut up"

Cos I hang out at N95 users and people there have been beta testing and got the email.

And when its done, you will be able to get it from -

http://shop.psiloc.com/en/

dont know how much for though.

I have installed the beta of Psiloc IR Remote on my N95.
It successfully controls my Samsung LE32R86 TV (but I could not find a working lirc code set for a Philips VCR and Canal+ Sat).

It does work from far; 6m is the highest distance that it works for me.
The only issue is that you have to aim directly at the IR target receiver. I mean directly! Even if you miss by 5 degrees the angle then it's not working.
The other issue of course is that the IR on N95 is on the side.
It's not practical at all.
The beta is free to download as long as you have purchased something from Psiloc before. I bought a theme for 3 (Psiloc Reflect, which is excellent btw) and then I was able to install the IR Remote app.

According to the site, the beta ends soon: 15th of November.

There is a site dedicated to the app and there you can see all the supported devices:
http://irremote.psiloc.com/
The list is a copy of official lirc list. Plus that different users have uploaded their own lirc code for a device.

It does look like you can run it in landscape mode though (hopefully rotated 270 degrees rather than the normal 90 so the IR port is at the top)
I suspect the limitation of angle you mentioned is to do with the hardware on the phone not the software so that may not improve in the final version.
Hopefully there will be a trial of the final product so I will wait and try that but otherwise I'm not that fussed.

If rotateme is running then you see the screen upside down!
Basically you just have to memorize the keys and don't look at the N95 screen.

I'm afraid so.
In the app settings you can choose between 6 different IR methods but I have no idea what each mode does and I can't find any explanation. They are named Method1, Method2, etc. The default is Method3. I haven't spot any difference between them; they all work if you just aim correctly. I was hoping that some certain setting would allow for bigger angle.
