Jjust received my N95 from o2 today and first impressions are favourable.
My query is with the firmware versions. What is the general opinion on the best firmware version to date? My phone is currently V.11, and to upgrade to v12 would require the rebranding of the producet code, and hence, voiding of my warranty.
Based on the below changes in 12 from 11:
A-GPS (assisted GPS) now implemented
Music playback continues after using voicedial
Music volume seems increased
Phone takes approx. 30 seconds longer to boot
3.5G now displayed when using HSDPA
What is everyones opinion on which firmware version to use?
The increased GPS would be a nice touch, while the 30 second power on delay sounds like my old 6630, which was immensely annoying to me as the phone had a habit of rebooting itself every once a day on average.
Are there any other key changes that people have noticed? I am hoping to make my decision asap so I can get round to installing the various apps and using my phone.
Any pointers are greatly appreciated, Cheers!
Hi there! And congrat on your new phone! (It's an amazing phone!)
In my opinion, updating to the latest Nokia firmware is essential. When I first purchased the phone back in March, the firmware was 10*****, and that firmware was godawful - how it managed to crawl out of the Nokia factory I do not know, but the 2 updates we have had have always shown much improvement to most of the features the phone has to offer!
The latest firmware doesn't offer as much as the previous one, but if you're a keen satnav person like myself, this is the key one. As it has the assisted GPS and believe me, it is a godsend!
If you're worried about changing the product code, fear not! There is lots of speculation that if you're phone goes wrong then the Nokia technicians wont fix it, but as to my experience this is not true. In the past - if something does go wrong, I just change it back to the original code and then post it off to the fixeruppers!
If you want any help on updating, message me!
Good Luck!
One annoying bug in v12 is the keypad misses key presses on a fairly regular basis. Not too much of an issue if you're just typing in phone numbers but it's getting to be a right pain in the ar$e when you do a lot of text input (or just start using the N95 for more than a phone).
Another thing about 12 I've found is that when you go to settings>phone & hit call, it goes back to the main menu
i would suggest staying with v11 i debranded my orange n95 to upgrade to v12 which wiped out my mms settings and had to reinstall them, but also there are a few bugs with v12!!!!
stay with v11 until there is an o2 version of v12
NO WAY!!
Go to v12, it makes the phone complete. Sure it has a couple of bugs but less than v11!!
A-GPS alone makes it worthwhile!!
I was on orange and changed the product code. It also unlocked VOIP software. As for communications settings there is an app on the phone that pre-configures them!!
im on 02 v11 too and cant decide wether to go for 12. cant find any reason too though i cant find any bugs as of yet except i heard that battery life is increasby up to 30% with v12 is this true.

No. (Edit - well, not for me, though I too have seen the reports) 😊
I bought an O2 N95 on EBay a week ago (I'm with O2 anyway) and I de-branded the phone and upgraded to V12 and I've had no problems at all - You loose the O2 screensaver, but that's no big deal!! I'd only had the phone for 2 days so I can't comment on battery life etc. The A-GPS is a big improvement, while the keypress bug is (In my opinion) only a minor problem.... Another apparent fix with V12 is the camera's "Auto sharpness" setting is less aggressive.
So if you use the camera and GPS a lot, then upgrade - If you don't use them much and the phone isn't suffering from any bugs etc then I'd say to wait until O2 approve and release V12.X.X.
Well i decided to debrand from o2 and upgrade to v12 cause my bluetooth werent workin, found some threads on changing time format but no avail, so thought what the hell, i got the key press bug too i did it a couple of days ago and ive found no increase in battery life.

i'd say there's something wrong with your phone unfortunately as i didnt find my phone to do the same thing
Hi, Im new to this N95.
Could somebody tell me how to update the firmware to V12. When I run the software updater it states I have the latest software V11 and I cant seem to see how I over write.
Thanks in advance
Andy
Just answering my own question.
Im assuming that because my N95 is a vodaphone phone, I cant get the v12 update until its released by Nokia or vodaphone.
Correct me if Im wrong.
Andy
As mentioned in this thread, you can get the new firmware if you change the product code of the phone to make it a generic Nokia, rather than branded by a provider.
This will almost certainly invalidate your warranty but you may not mind (I didn't 😉 ).
Search around to see how to do this, if you're interested. It's very straightforward.
