GPS AGPS A lil lost

Righty - im sure this has been covered in many a topic but im so lost i need someone to help with my questions. for information purposes i think i have 100kb allowance a month on my contract

Right, turn maps on the n95 (with agps) it locates me, and say i walk up the road and look for a street whilst im doing so - will this cost me ?

Now when i open maps on some occasions i get the red cross by the sat and the data packet in the right hand corner, can someone explain what this is doing, and again does it cost me.

when reading the other posts the only time i can see it costs is when im actually using the voice command - is this correct ?

Ive all the latest maps so have it non enabled to updates

if someone can help it would be appreciated

matt

By default Maps is set up to download map data on the fly, this will cost you as it retrieves the required map area as you move into it. You can preload the maps using the MapLoader available for free from Nokia's web site. If you do that, the only costs will be the tiny data transfer that a-GPS does when it starts up (about 6kb) and then any downloads (like voice nav) but these will warn your first.

Unlikely. 100 kilobits (or even bytes) is not worth measuring. You need to find out for certain. It's more likely to be 100 MB (megabytes).

It depends. The Maps application uses data traffic for two things: A-GPS and downloading the actual maps. A-GPS uses tiny amounts of data and shouldn't trouble you. If you really do have a 100kb limit (or a data plan that's troubled by the small amount of traffic involved in A-GPS), then you need a new data plan. Something with at least 4MB a month, and 100MB or more if you're using the N95 to its full potential.

The maps themselves can also be downloaded over the mobile network. If you walk down the road into a blank green area and then the map appears, it's being downloaded over the mobile network. This will consume huge amounts of data, and you need to load the maps in advance, to prevent this happening.

You need the Map Loader application for PC (maps.nokia.com). Get a big memory card, download the countries you might travel to, and off you go. If you do this, the Maps application on the phone should only use data traffic for A-GPS and local information, which will be well within a decent data plan.

The red cross means no GPS information is available, or it's disabled. Change the view to Satellite info, to see what's going on with the GPS. That won't cost you.

Use the Log application to check your data usage. It records packet data transactions, so you can see how much data is being transmitted.

With a-gps turned on, and allowing the device to use a network connection (like o2 mobile web) it will use up about 6kb of data every time the a-gps is used to aide in getting a lock

The red cross means you have no sat connection, if the data packet indicator is on, it may mean one of two things, or both. 1. that the device is using a-gps to get a signal, and like i said should use up about 6kb of data, or 2. that the device is actually downloading maps, assuming you havent pre-loaded them, this will take up a serious amount of data and could cost you a lot of money

the voice guided direction actually costs you pound notes, as in 5 for a week, up and up to a year, but if you have an active data connection and you only get 100kb a month limit, it could end up costing you money on your bill that way. if you turn of a-gps and have all the maps you need pre-loaded, you wont incur any data charges.

hope that's some help 😊

Thanks for the replies peeps, i have got 100kb allowance, will definately get this changed, one thing ive noticed now is that im getting a permanent red cross, could someone provide all settings so that im able to check against, the first day i updated the firmware it worked, since then nothing 😞

Thanks

Matt

A permanent red cross? are you talking about the first screen of the globe when MAPS initially starts? If so, just press skip and goto 'options> view> satellite info' and see if your phone is locating any satellites, you'll know if you see numbers with boxes to the right of them. If three or more of these go black then you have a lock. If you are getting numbers with clear boxes, your receiver is working and communicating with satellites.

With AGPS off, you will have to wait a bit longer before your phone gets a lock, just be patient, especially from a cold start.

😡 so A-GPS uses GPRS to enable quicker positioning?
you can turn this on and off in the options of nokia maps?
if so it doesnt work!! mine still connects to the GPRS network when i have sufficient maps loaded and have all the options to do with connection to the GPRS network turned of found out last month its costing me a fortune!!!!

Yes, it does.

richydraper wrote:you can turn this on and off in the options of nokia maps?

No, it is under the general phone Settings option. "Settings" then "General" then "Positioning" then "Positioning methods". Uncheck the "Assisted GPS" option.
