Buying an E65. Need some questions answered first.

I hope this is the right forum. I am planning to buy an E65 soon.. (can't wait for the E51 to be released and drop prices. 😞)
this is gonna be my first Symbian phone btw..

1.) I need to be able to chat with my friends on Yahoo messenger, are there any free and good stable apps out there?
(I found out about Morange, is that good/stable?)

2.) Are crashes common when surfing?

that's it for now.. hoping to be enlightened. 😊

1. Not sure about free apps, but IM+ works with Yahoo messenger and it works on the E65.

2. The E65 does have it's problems, which is not surprising as there has not been any firmware releases from Nokia, in fact the current firmware is dated 11th January 2007. However, compared to the N95, it is reliable and is not prone to frequent reboots. The browser can sometimes exit without reason, and the messaging system can sometimes cause a reboot, but IMHO it is rare.

K.

1. YMtiny if the best free messenger from my point of view.
2. On E70 the browser crashes pretty frequent. Anyway, there's Opera Mini out there.

thanks for suggesting YMtiny! 😃
I guess I could live with very rare crashes.. (they are very rare right?)

-should I worry about security and/or viruses on an S60 phone? (I'll be using WLAN often..)

That's interesting, do you really mean crash, or just it closing down because of lack of ram? Because I don't recall the browser ever crashing.

No, I mean crashing. The page is about 80% finished in loading and suddenly the browser dissapears. When the RAM is low the browser displays a memory full messge and stops loading the page.

is there a "Go To" or "My Shortcuts" feature on the phone? The "My Own" key won't cut it since it only opens one app.. I need a list of my frequently used apps to be displayed..

There is a Go to but not all the apps can be draged in it and there's also the active standby + two softkeys.

Hi guys,
I'm planning to buy E65 today, but when I was looking over the Internet on reviews.... I decided to wait for couple days... Many people say that there are lots of phones not working properly. Self reboot when someone is calling you. Phone call cuts of when you recieve sms etc. I'm not sure if it's true, but that's what I was reading couple minutes ago.
Did someone hear something like that?:frown:

can the active standby icons be extended beyond what is visible on the screen by scrolling?
what are the apps available in Go To?

I need shortcuts to New SMS, Message Inbox, a Calculator app, Calls log[recieved/missed/dialed], Calendar, Notes, To-Do list, Bluetooth/Infrared.
and maybe an "Apps Folder" (where all my apps are installed; for easy access)
There are others more, but those are the ones I really need direct access to while on standby/idle screen.
is it possible? thanks.

#lisgafi: I'm worried about those too.. :con? I'll be buying an open-line or no service provider one, should I be worried?
but I've read that a firmware update will be available on October.. just hope it'll be soon.

The number of apps you can put on active standby is by default fixed. Not sure whether 3rd party apps can extend this limit.

One thing you can consider is using the voice command feature, not sure whether it's available on the E65 but on the E70 it is pretty useable. Eg I can toggle bluetooth on/off just by saying "bluetooth" - much easier/quicker than clicking through the menus. Unfortunately you can only use voice commands for the builtin apps.

I don't know about those without full querty's, but the E61 has keypad shortcuts for bluetooth, Infrared. E.g. bluetooth on/off is blue corner + ctrl. Perhaps there are similar for E65.

Inbox, Calendar and To Do list can be found on the active standby, call log is gained by pressing green, and that leaves you a bunch of shortcuts for on top of active standby and you can rearrange/reorder the menu screen so that the 'apps folder' you want will be the first under your cursor when you hit menu button. There is nothing in that list you cant setup in 10 minutes 😊 I in fact have a very similar setup, your only omission compared to my setup is the music player and maps.

You'll have no trouble in that respect I don't think 😊

thanks for suggesting the voice command feature, but I don't think I want to use that for often.. maybe just for bluetooth. 😊
does pressing the green button display all call logs, or just the dialed? I need quick access to dialed, missed and received calls.

I would be very grateful if anyone can confirm that all the things I listed could have a shorcut or easy access from standby screen. (maybe a combination of icons on active standby + Go To list + custom button shortcuts)
I added one more (bolded)

I need shortcuts to New SMS, Message Inbox, a Calculator app, Calls log[recieved&missed&dialed], Calendar, Notes, To-Do list, Bluetooth/Infrared.
and maybe an "Apps Folder" (where all my personal apps are installed; for easy access) and WLAN

pressing the call button comes up with a list of all the recently dialled numbers, clicking left from this goes to recieved calls, left again is missed. Missed calls are shown on the "active standby" screen which means you can go straight to it if its available... WLAN can be put up on your active standby screen (quick access). The active standby apps is customisable and not only that but you can also create further shortcut combos... As for the crashing, its not that often but annoying if it happens.

Gerry

thanks for clearing the call button thing.. 😊 Now I know that I could have quick access to all of those.
-another question. sorry for asking so many questions. but how is the Wi-Fi receiver of this phone? Is it problematic or as good as a laptop's?

wifi - pretty good, better than the N80 - not as good as my Dell or Toshiba laptop, but better thanthe USB one on my desktop ...

Wifi - isn't something I use a lot though, bad for battery and I find 3g good enough (on an unlmited data plan)

Gerry

I have to say that, like you, i have read quite a few reports of problems with rebooting and so on, on the E65, but i have to say that mines been very good. I don't have any rebooting at all, the battery life is amazing, the screen is very vivid and sharp. Everything works as it should, it even has a good amount of RAM, and it doeesn't seen to suffer memory leakage too badly either, it starts after a reboot with about 23Mg and never drops below 21 when all apps are shut, which is really good even after a couple of days good use. The only bug i ever get is the one where the hardware buttons randomly stop working, but it's very infrequent and rebooting sorts it out. Oh and the camera has a bit of a green tint to it, but its only really noticable in low light.

On the whole though, it's one of nokia's best i feel. It just works.

it's October now, and I'm having a bit of financial difficulties, so I've decided to wait for comments about the coming firmware update, or the E51..
just curious, how much was the E65 when it was first launched?

Dont buy one phone which can not run APP. It's kinda popular to read email and chat and browse on mobile phone to enjoy your mobilize life in any of countries. Morange is good, free, stable, fantastic UI.

what do you mean by APP?

it seems that a firmware update for unbranded ones is already out.
any comments on what are the improvements?

Tried Mig33, Agile, ebuddy before, but gave up 1 week ago after I got my new N73. Following a lot forum recommendations, I am now a new Morange user. I saw it on my friend's E61, was shocked by its neat interface. So decided to give it a try. So far, I think it is a wise choice.

For Morange, I tried in on E61 (which is an earlier version of your E61i). The experience was terrific (due to the wide screen and qwert keyboard). The software won't eat up too much memory. Speed is very fast. I am now using it on my N73 and N95 since I need camera function. But I really miss the wide screen of E61!

Enjoy Morange on your E61i.
