Very strange N80 sms problem

My N80:
V 4.0623.0.42
20-09-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (02)
Product code: 0529380

I discovered a very strange problem with my N80 while writing sms.
Normally when writing a sms you have 160 characters per sms available.
However when I use any of the following characters the characters available for the sms is decreased by 90.
These characters are:
À Á Â Ã Ç á â ã Ë È Ê Ð ë ê ð Ï Ì Í Î ï í î Ó Ò Ô Õ ó ô õ Ú Ù Û ú û Ý Þ ý þ
This happens only once, so if I use more than 1 of these characters in a single sms, the available characters for the sms is only decreased by 90.

For example:
If I only write the word "danielle", I am left with 152 available characters for the sms.
If I write the word "daniëlle", I am left with 62 characters available for the sms.

I went to the local nokia shop, where I was told this was a software problem (DUH! Oh really?), but as I had the latest software they couldn't do anything.
I even called Nokia Care Tech Support, where they were flabbergasted and then told me that it's normal that certain characters use more memory than others. I can't accept this answer, as a friends N73 doesn't do this.

Anyone else have this too?

might be coding issue.

yes, is the encoding.
I had the same problem before on a N93
make sure in messaging/settings txt messages you have this:
character encoding: full support
message sent as: text

try that
also I had a problem and make my service provider (orange in my case) reset (I will call that refresh) my account on their servers.
Apart of the encoding issue (just like yours) I had a problem that my contacts never receive my caller id number, was always hidden.
So I dont know if the full support has nothing to do about it, but try both options.

greetings from the caribbean!
