during update, the updater popped up with phone recovery, this happened three times with no success and the update wasn't completed although my phone starts up normally. how do i know if i'm still on the old firmware? how do i know if it really is safe and is not partially bricked.

Seems this is a quite often problem, I was reading this also in other forums.
Don't worry, as long as it reboots and works, everything is fine.
The firmware version is found by pressing *#0000#
