Debranding 02 uk n95

hey, im sure this has been asked before but i couldnt find while looking so here goes.

what are peoples results with debranding n95s from o2 uk? and does it enable a-gps?

i know the phone will support it but does o2? (if thats how it works... i know it has something todo with cell towers..)

i use the gps on my phone, and the lock times are just evil.. so agps would be a big help to me.

ive been waiting for v12 from o2 for awhile now and still waiting. is there any news on this?

so what are the benifits and drawbacks of debranding a uk n95 on o2.

thanks

Well my understanding is A-GPS works by reporting your GPS location along with your celltower ID, country code and network along with the IDs of surrounding cell towers back to nokia. No communication is done via 02 at all. ( A bit like psyloc mini gps )

So the more people use A-GPS the more accurate it will become and nokia build up a map of cell sites and locations themselfs. If nobody in your area is using A-GPS then it will be less accurate as your doing the initial mapping.

I could be completely wrong though 😉

Sounds like your N95 is faulty if you get long GPS lock times when you use GPS often. GPS takes longer to lock the further away in time or distance since the last lock.

I don't use AGPS because it uses GPRS data (not much, but I'm on a crummy data tariff). My lock times are usually under a minute.

mines not faulty. i just normally dont try and get a lock in the same place. if i do i get a quick lock. but normally ill use it when im not sure where im going and so on ... so is in a different place each time.

Bit of an impatient bump, wasn't it?
The forum doesn't work like a customer service helpline!
Anyway to the problem.
AGPS came in with ver.12 firmware and the lock times that are experienced are somewhere in the 20-30 sec area.
You will have to debrand if O2 is still on ver.11, but, it does make a considerable difference.
When (if?) you debrand don't use backup and restore. There are some that will say this has no effect and there are some (me included) who strongly believe that restoring an earlier version backup after a debrand/update has a detrimental effect. Not to mention any problems with where you installed your apps which can result in missing icons and unfound installs if you use your mem card. Put all your apps on the phone mem and reinstall all software each time. It takes longer, but greatly improves stability.
Just do a sync of your PIM with PC Suite.
