Using n95 to view a webcam

17 replies · 15,875 views · Started 13 October 2007

Here's what I'd like to achieve. Not sure best way of going about it, or even if it's possible.

We live in a flat, and we have a baby.

My wife and I would like to occasionally visit neighbours in the flat next door in the evening while the baby is asleep.

It would be great if we could be at our neighbours but be able to keep an eye on the baby remotely.

Can I rig up a webcam in the baby's room and use my N95 to view the webcam? I can get online using my neighbour's WLAN.

What would be the best way of doing this? Can I 'broadcast' my webcam online and pick this up via a URL? Do I need special software?

All suggestions greatfully received.

Regards

Im not too sure on this so dont quote me on it, but im sure you might be able to do something like with winamp or similar, where you set up a live stream running from your webcam, onto the Winamp server.

Once its on the server, i would imagine (and once again dont quote me on this) that you should then be able to pick up the stream in your N95 and view remotely 😉

Hope this helps for you mate.

There's also the option of finding some software to host regularly-taken shots as JPGs on a web page, which refresh automatically (not as a Java applet). That wouldn't be a true video feed though, just a shot every few seconds.

I think Orb can do that. Not sure how to set it up properly. I use a built-in webcam so sometimes it does't work. Try Orb out.

webcam aside, as a mother take the baby with you, its only next door but look at what could happen with baby left on there own

as is the freeware wwigo ...

Trendcam is pretty good. If you're next door then a laptop or other wifi PC would be able to view the N95 ..

Good luck!

As a father, dont leave your baby in another flat.

You are now a parent, you have responsibilities.

Not quite the same I know but look what happened to the McCanns when they left their children and went off for a drink and a chat (assuming or course they had nothing to do with the disappearance.

Orb will do that. If you have a uPNP WiFi router, and the signal reaches next door, it will do it over the WLAN rather than across the Internet.

if your only in a flat and going next door doesnt the baby monitor reach that far??

Oh, fer chrissakes, give the guy a break. He's talking about the flat next door. What's the difference between that and two different rooms in a big house? Jeez.

I agree, people are retty judgemental considering this is a phone forum and he didn't ask for moral opinions!
I have a webcam in the office and I use EasyWebCam (there is a free version which works perfectly and just puts 'uregistered' in the bottom of the pics). This uploads via ftp to a web server location as often as you want (down to 1 minute). since thats just a jpeg it will display fine on the N95.

It also has an option which allows you to connect directly to the software and view a live stream but I haven't used that so don't know if it will work on the N95. As I say, there is a free version so give it a try

hahaha, people never ask for moral opinions... others always give them for free... :banghead:

I use Whoosh Cam.

Totally free and works brilliantly. A proper webcam app....not static images.
You install the server app on your PC and the client app on the phone.

The PC bit uploads to a server at Whoosh and the phone connects to that.

If you are close enough to pick up your wireless LAN it'll work over that too.....so no data charges.

is there a Symbian client for the N95 ? coz it looks like its a windows mobile app.

millssteven.......did you try WhooshCam ?

Or anyone else ?

I'd be interested to hear if there is a BETTER solution for viewing a webcam feed.

Hi
Sorry, I remained pretty silent on this thread after kick-starting the whole discussion.
Haven't tried it yet, but will definitely look into it and let you know.
Regarding the safety issue- yes I was aware that this might be something people would pick up on, and it was interesting to see all the opinions!
As mentioned in one of the posts - the fact is we'd be literally the other side of a wall in the same building- not like being in the neighbour's house. Probably closer than many parents would be to their child if the child were in a bedroom upstairs in a big house. But nonetheless, since the McCann thing it is obviously a worry...
