It seems that the World Generic 1 versions of the P1i are privileged enough to receive the 2nd firmware update so far for the P1i. Here's some information on the version numbers:

Phone: CXC 162037 R9J005
Bluetooth: CXC 162143 R1D
Organizer: CXC 162108 R6F41
CDA: 162022/1 R6F38

I'll give more information about the firmware as soon as I receive more information on it.

If you're adventurous and want to change your firmware to the World Generic 1 version, you can try Davinci. Please note that I'm not endorsing anything here, and if your P1i screws up when you flash it with Davinci, I'm not responsible for it.

I'm still stuck on the default firmware, as I'm on the Hong Kong version. So much for supposedly having the "newest" firmware out there 😞

You can check the firmware version you currently have on your phone by going to "main menu" followed by "More" and "System Information". This list displays the latest firmware for your P1i, so if you see that the one on your phone is different from the one on the list, chances are your phone is eligible for an update.

Here's a rundown of some of the new stuff in this new firmware (the good and the bad)

* New build of Opera v8.65 Build 701 - Hopefully its more stable than the previous build. But I'm still waiting for that Opera 9 for UIQ.

* New camera layout! Loads of people said it was nice; again, loads said 'twas ugly. Your pick.

* File Manager now loads faster, much much faster.

* Drastic increase in menu navigation speed and transitions - whoa, this is like a miracle come true! Either SE had s**tty programmers to start off with when they released it or some SE executive snapped when their phone lagged on them. Or maybe both.

* When using dark themes, handwriting now have white borders to differentiate your words from the background. This should have been there when the phone was released.

Note that the notorious Green Tint issue has NOT been fixed. Time for a petition, I'm afraid.

Not Too Sure If Any Chages Have Been Made But This Is The Newest As Far As I Know

I upgraded to this version last week and have had a few issues since doing so. In any text entry screen, and most annoyingly in text messages, the text entry defaults to numbers first, so I have to press Alt first. Also the auto cap doesnt work either.

Have spoken to Sony and they have said if a master reset (I need to do a backup tonight before I try this) doesnt work it needs to be sent off. Anyone else had similar issues?

All else looks good though

seems like a phone fault as i dont have any of those problems mate, erm if you have done the system reset and that flopped then i would send it back, i checked and they aint got no new firmware updates recently so its one of those or you could update the phone again and see if that helps the scenerio.....

well after 15 minutes of randomly changing text input settings, ie handwriting on then off etc its now working. so going to stick with it for now and see if its better after the next upgrade.

after it worked the first time I tried turning on the onscreen keyboard and that broke it again, and took another 10 mins to get it working again,... wont try that again!

strange...

Hi guys,

First post here!

I bought my phone about two weeks ago and flashed the firmware with the latest the Sony Updater recommended. It turns out it was an Arabic update. This in itself isn't an issue although when I'm typing a bunch of foreign characters pop up on the top right of the screen. Is this something I can turn off?

As a side note, I backed up all my data before flashing but had to put loads of it back in manually. Is it normal for full backups to not back everything up?

I've come from the Palm world and am used to hving full backup software on the device itself so that a restore can be made on the road. Are there any apps that do this for UIQ, or is the OS that stable that it is not required?

Just so you know (I'm an O2 UK user), my firmware etc is as follows:

I've got exactly the same problem, only happens with the latest firmware (trade netherlands version, I think). Pressing Alt switches to normal mode for a few minutes, then next time I go to type it's back in number mode.

It must just be a software problem, but the P1i is such a bad user experience in every other way I think I'm just going to ditch it and switch to Series 60.

So there's no new firmware for the Hong Kong version. That's what I have too. I'm generally happy with the phone except it sometimes does not do backup and recovery properly. It hangs from time to time, which leads me to think it might be a firmware problem.

im a little confused about the firmware issue - is it the same everywhere if its the same model - i ask cause i got mine for the Sony Ericsson P1i at that site and im just worried its going to backfire on me

New firmware spotted for the P1i - R9K009
No solid details of what was upgraded is available, there was a claim that PROFILES were implemented in the UIQ 3 system. (If SE did indeed did that, the day the firmware is available would be one of the days in UIQ 3 history 😊

Other rumours include that photos taken will be of a higher quality, a faster user-interface response, faster focus for the camera, as well as a 45 second boot time.

Only time will tell for what this updated firmware promises. Stay tuned for more information!
