Also on Symbian's stand at the Smartphone Show was this video demo of the new Demand Paging feature in Symbian OS 9.3 and above. Among other things shown was a dramatic reduction in RAM requirements for most apps and well over 30MB free RAM on the testbed vanilla Nokia N95. See below for the embedded video.

I hope that's something that becomes available as a general update on unlocked devices and not something we only see in future devices.
I thought Symbian 9.5 (announced back in Mar 07) has got 'demand paging?' not Symbian 9.3
[I heard there was no 9.4 version due to it being unlucky in Asia.]
But I agree, it would be nice to see this on say the N95 as a firmware update. But I realise in the past this isn't something they've done.
How i wish this would be backported to older phones like N73 or N80. =)
Please let this be a part of the upcoming FW Update. That would be amazing!!!
That the N95 8GB edition will be the first to support demand paging having been backported to S603.1/SoS9.2.
It's not as simple as a feature backport though since the baseport needs to be updated to take into account paging. Therfore widespread roll out of a DP enabled firmware accross all s60 devices is unlikely.
To Serious 60:
But it can be done.
Correct me if I am wrong, but both devices in the video are N95 (classic).
ODP will be included later in N95 FW update. I've been running it for a month now and it's very very nice...
To Zorbas:
How do you know this? And where did you get your hands on ODP (On Demand Paging?)?
"How do you know this?"
I'd be surprised if he knew this for certain. It's obviously technically feasible but so are a lot of things, landing on the moon for example, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen.
hmm.........pretty good
but im sure nokia's not gonna update the current phones
they havnt even released a firmware for 5700 yet (off-topic)
but neway 5700 still turns on in 24-25 seconds 😊
If Nokia will not update current phones, what is the use of this software/firmware?
The new phones will have more RAM..
An even bigger question remains:
though it seems logical: does demand paging clean RAM when closing applications?!
For the N95 18MB free would be enough, if it was still 18MB free at the end of the day! But after making one picture and browsing the web once (shortly) you never see more than 10MB free RAM again (with me useally 4/5MB at the end of the day)..
to Zorbas: Why do you know so clearly that this is coming as an update to N95?
We also have already seen a proto N95 with VGA screen and a 6290 with Feature Pack 2 and that still does not mean that we ever see any of these phones updated with these features. 😉
PS: If you maybe know ... Will there be also backports to N73 or N80? I mean if they can do such an backport for the N95 it cant be THAT hard to do. Maybe they only need to change some core files of the underlying os and thats it. 😉
well if it can be done on n95 then it would be pretty simple to do it on 5700 also
coz they both share the same OS.........fp1
Its already available internally for all nokia employees...
to zorbas,
just wonderin, how come ur sure nokia's actually releasin the DP on n95? u hv any inside news? or r u actually a nokia employee?
but anyway, if this is true, i wont bother to sell my current n95 for the 8GB version...
Hello zorbas!
When will the new N95 firmware supporting demand paging be available?
Any chance to get the Nokia intern firmware???
to zorbas
