Annoyed with Nokia Maps & GPS

19 replies · 6,015 views · Started 19 October 2007

I've got the most up to date firmware (v12) and when i first upgraded the firmware i noticed my maps software was picking my position up in about 20 seconds flat.

Yesterday, i left work and tried using my maps software, keypad open as instructed etc.

I had maps on for a good 5 minutes, and it didnt find me on satellite at all during this time which p*ssed me off to say the least especially when it looked like it was still connecting to my network using A-GPS which will obviously charge?

Is there any reason this is happening, there were satellites in the area i know because i checked on my phone

Someone help because its really annoying me!

You're not doing the same as I did first time I used it, are you? Are you getting three solid green dots in the bottom right? If so, it has locked on, but doesn't take you to your current position unless you press "0".

I dont get any dots at all mate - it looks exactly the same as it used to before i had V12, apart from the fact i have the option for AGPS

It just looks like a mini-satellite with a red X on it :frown:

You have to update the Nokia Maps application, you have the old beta version.

The internal GPS is indeed a bit weak.
But after the update it's much faster.

Ahh do i just do that by plugging my phone into the PC and getting it from Nokia's website?:icon14:

Yes, from maps.nokia.com click the download tab.
On the left side is the latest maps application, on the right the map loader. I suggest that you download and install them both (the first on the phone and the second on the pc)

Quality mate! Well appreciated! I hope this sorts my problems out!! woohooo! 😃

if i hadnt read this thread i wud never had know to get the NEW maps app....thanks guys!

I would say don't get a new Maps application. Only the one built in to the phone has the tracking option for free, on the newer download versions you only get tracking when you pay for voice navigation.

The Maps application should have no impact on how long the GPS takes to lock.

To see how well the phone is getting satellite info, start Maps and go to Options, View, Satellite info.

A GPS receiver will take longer to lock the further it is in either time or distance from the last lock.

True, but:
-I do want the voice navigation anyway (I paid for a 3yr license) and I do not care to buy any other GPS software.

-The most important issue with the original beta is that street names with accented characters do not display correctly (problem with unicode chars). I suppose that if you only gonna use it in the UK or USA it's ok, but take a look at the maps anywhere else in Europe, Finland or Spain for example, it's very messy looking.
-The map and navigation colour theme is very much improved in the new app.

Sure theoretically the GPS takes the same time to lock, but I get the overall feeling of improvement in the speed, because the app uses the APIs differently. The AGPS method certainly works much much better in the new version (combined with the v12 firmware). That alone is a big plus.
Then in the old version you had to wait for the GPS to lock in order to start navigation. With the new version you don't need to wait. I enter in my (underground) garage and before I start driving, I calculate the route I want and I start the navigation (and the driving towards the correct route). Eventually after a minute driving on the outside I get a lock. With the old version I had to get out of the garage and park somewhere outside waiting for a signal lock to start the navigation.

But finally it's really up to the personal needs. I'd say, if you gonna use the maps application do the upgrade. They certainly gonna keep up improving the application, so IMO it's worth it.

Of course, if you've paid for the voice navigation, there's no reason not to get the latest version of Nokia Maps. If, like me, you like tracking but don't have Voice Navigation, stick with the original Nokia Maps software that comes with the phone.

I really don't think the GPS will lock quicker with a newer version of the Nokia Maps application.

To echo whats been said, GPS lock shouldnt make a difference whatever your using. But it does, trust me. Ive used....lemme count...8 different bits of software that uses the GPS, and some are different.

And yes, I was aware of the conditions. Exactly the same place, same weather.

Whats more interesting is that some software seems to cope a lot differently to getting a lock while moving (your supposed to stay still, but many dont bother waiting to get a lock - like me).

I've installed the new update, and have noticed the difference in how it looks already.

Am i right in thinking though that my maps i had on there will now be deleted, as i only quickly opened it, but it seemed to find me straight away, but seemed to try downloading maps again?

No it will not delete any maps. But perhaps you didn't have complete maps for some region and it's trying to fill it up. It's better that you download the whole mapset with PC Map Loader and then transfer them to the device, if you haven't done it already.
Or it's just trying to use the assisted gps and the network based positioning.

I didn't know tha the maps app was available seperatley to a firmware update. Ae there any other standard apps which can be updated on their own?

I use the tracking feature so don't want to update maps, but do you think that the next firmware update will upgrade maps anyway hence giving me no choice?

On the locking front, I was in Venice this weekend and without A-GPS (data charges were very high) I got a lock within 30 seconds most of the time where I wasn't in a narrow lane. What I noticed though was that once I had the lock it kept it really well, even during small stints in my bag while was using my camera. However, in the narrow lanes it did have trouble pin pointing my exact possition and the cursor would jump around a bit.

But the best thing though was while inside a water bus when I arrived I got a lock almost straight away, despite the last lock having been in the Czech Republic - I was very impressed!

Check Nokia sites frequently. There are always new goodies and updates. Check the software links here:
N95 support
Nokia beta labs
NSeries Applications for N95

For example, the "Nokia Mobile Search" v4 is completely new and requires the uninstalling of the original search app.

Soon we'll know

So, just to clarify, I've been reading various threads about this and it seems installing the new nokiamaps app is not always a great idea?
I do not need voice navigation and only use the n95 maps for finding routes to places on foot.
It seems the new app will find a route but not show me where I am on this route as I'm walking?

As I'm using this in both UK and Australia it looks like voice navigation for one year will cost 160 which is pretty daft.

Regarding the new version of Nokia Search,
it's very nice upgrade, but ....
I expected that it will integrate the search results with maps,
i.e. the results of searching, like companies, hotels, pizzas and so on
will be able to be shown on the map, which was included for some reason
in the previous version of application. Unfortunatelly, there is no more map at all.

Apologies for bumping this thread up. I am just keen to find the answer to my above question regarding whether to install the new maps application or not. Thanks.
