All right it is time for this question, upgrade or not.
Pros:
- Bigger better screen
- 8Gb internal memory
- 2x RAM
- Demand Paging
- No more annoying shortcut menu
- Hard plastic screen protector.
Cons:
- No SD slot which is kinda important since I have a 2Gb with my music on it and I carry a 4gb for videos and photos (well 8gb is bigger than 4+2 but I like to swap in case i need more). Also transfer rate in a card reader is faster than USB, and finally in one of these days where PC suite just refuses to work I can still move stuff with the SD reader.
- No Video Editor, which is the only reason I need bigger RAM space, DAMN you Nokia.
- Back cover is not textured and nice feeling like the regular n95
- Not exactly sure about the whole black colour thing
- The hard plastic screen protector is right on the surface, so forget about laying your phone face down.
Anywho anyone has any thoughts.......
You're one of the few people who aren't so keen on the black, like me, it seems! Mine really comes down to: upgrading would cost way more than the improvements are worth. On balance I'd get the 8GB as a new device I suspect, since the RAM improvement can't be ignored, but I'm not going to upgrade.
I'm in the same camp. I bought an N95 sim free cos I couldn't wait for my 18 month contract to be up. This means in 4 months I'll get an upgrade and probably will get the 8Gb N95 as it'll be free by then or very cheap and the sale of my older N95 will cover the cost.
If I had to pay for the phone outright probably not. There's a chance demand paging might be released for standard N95's and a possibility of larger than 8Gb cards being released. If you've got to pay a lot of money for to upgrade I don't think the improvements are worth it.
the 95-1 (your nomenclature) gets demand paging I think the 2X memory isn't such a huge advantage.
I was hugely disappointed they didn't put an optical zoom lens in the 95-8 or a much better screen.
There's a sharp model available in Japan (has been for about 10months) which has 5Mpix and optical zoom .. so how hard can it be?
Cheers
if... i like if. now if only the bigger screen was a touch screen. day dreaming over. the bigger screen, double ram and new OS are the only ones that appeal to me. i'll stick to my n95-1

S60 is going to adapt touchscreen. they have a video about it.

i'm aware of that. can't get enough watchin' that vid but i just bought my n95, that was a full summer's work salary, if only i can opt for mods i'd be up for that.
I do like it in black!
I changed mine from silver to black but ended up making the buttons a bit dodgy to use so changed it back!

I'm pretty much in agreement with you. Lack of lens cover, plus the main reason for wanting more RAM (video editor) has been removed. No, I'll be hanging onto my mark 1 for a while.
I REALLY hope they add Demand Paging to the next N95-1 firmware - if they do I have no need for the 8GB model.
I can get an 8GB MicroSDHC card for about $100 and the 0,2" larger screen only makes the device mure bulky.
I have no problem with battery life (have chargers at strategic locations (office, car, home), and I like the lens protector of the N95-1
I dont think the 8GB model has demand paging either does it?
Its just a proof of concept that could go into one or either devices.

at least according to Steve Litchfield .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geosKqU8vl4
I'd really like to see it on the N95-1 .. as a firmware version .. probably 13.x
Still see no reason to buy an 8GB ..
Al the other things are unimportant in comparison to the 2 x memory. It's a huge difference. You can't even load one big newspaper webpage (2 MB) in a normal N95-1, using the internal webbrowser, because the phone is going to complain. It has been that way in all version of the OS. And if you are surfing the Internet and suddenly want to take a picture, you need to start the surfing all over again after taking the picture. The memory in N95-1 is complete madness from the part of Nokia.
I can't change my N95-1 to a N95 8 MB because I don't have the money, but I wish I could.
I'll be sticking with my N95-1 for the time being, firstly because ive only just got it and secondly because i can only see two main things as far as i am concerned.
1 - Memory - 8gb.....makes no differnce to me, i have a 4gb stick and another on the way, so there's my 8gb
2 - RAM yeah fair enough its double RAM, but im not RAM hungry anyways, i close a program when i use it, ive never had problems with the amount of RAM onthe N95-1
The N95-8GB definitely has the advantage as its an update of older technology, in battery, memory, display and capacity(at the moment).
Nokia should have left a Mini SD slot in the N95-8GB with the way Memory cards are increasing in capacity so quickly one day the original N95 may have more capacity than the N95-8GB because all cards up to 6GB all have been compatible. So one day 8GB or 16GB micro SD card could be running in yout N95 and that would beat the N95-8GB.
Another problem i see is no lens cover, scratches and dust will definitely cause problems over time to the lens.
I really do not understand why Nokia keeps doing this. The N95 was perfect in every way except the RAM, so they give you this but take some back? Oh well looks like I'll wait for the N96 or 97 or whatever they will come out with.

can't go wrong with black... actually i asked a friend who has the know how on decals to make my n95-1 black decals, but he said why black, why not imitate HPs black zen pattern? now that's cool!! :icon14:

i couldn't agree with you more, although i have this hunch that the n95-1 is not totally left behind... the n95 8gb imo was made simply as an anti-iphone device (black, big screen, 8gb memory, nokia music store = itunes) there prolly wasn't much time to redesign a whole new n-series device and with the n95's current success but early release, they were prolly thinking, "apple got something out, we should let everyone know we're not behind, the n95 is still our best piece of of work, why don't we try and address its few shortcomings". but still, however the n95 is improved with the n95 8gb they still put a lot of drawbacks to it. after seeing the demand paging video installed on an n95-1 (or maybe it was an n95-3 american version with better batt) and sandisk's succesful micro SDHC cards and probable future firmware updates, the n95-1 may yet still be just as superior if not more than the n95 8gb.
or nokia may just as well scr*w us over, one never knows:con?
