microSD catches up the 'built-ins'

SanDisk has started shipping 8GB versions of its microSD and M2 cards, for the current generation of S60 3rd Edition and UIQ 3-powered smartphones, taking possible capacity of these devices to 8GB while maintaining the flexibility to swap cards or transfer data in this way. MyMemory, (e.g.) have these coming soon at £60 inc VAT)

There still seems to be a lot of confusion about which devices support this - how about a quick list of those which have been tried and tested? For example, I would love to buy an E90 and this might tip the balance for me (that and £100 off - which is inevitable), but I can't find any official Nokia statement saying it supports SDHC. Anyone sucked it and seen?

The link to 'my memory' given above suggests 4GB limit - is this out of date, or is there a firmware limitation (ala 9210)?
I remember The Register referring to the old N95 recently as a '4GB' device. Will those who have tried please report back!

It's amazing that this is getting into a card so small. And it's great! But given this feat, can Nokia actually justify not enabling the N95 with a card reading slot as well/instead of built in flash? I'm an E90 user and love it and will look forward to getting a card which can hold my whole CD collection eventually - 7GB - but would have considered the N95 as well as in every other way it suits me a little better - with a BT keyboard of course. Except maybe in build quality. Anyway, my question is about the card reader in the N95. Wouldn't it have been better if there *really* wasn't room for both?

The 8GB version is not SDHC version (which is only supported by E90 and N95 yet). Its regular MicroSD...

Talking abt SDHC Card, they are soon going to climb 64GB Mark (Thanks to Samsung). n even 16GB SDHC cards are already in the market....

device manufacturers generally only rate their products with what has been tested against. which means in practice what is in the market at the same time as the device. As more become available they may retest it and re-rate it.

AFAIK the usual limit in file systems is at 2GB (32 bit limitation), and if a file system supports *anything* more than that it should generally support *everything* more than that.

Now I'm not an expert in this field, but the 8GB microSD card definitely IS 'SDHC', so yes, just the E90 and N95 - any other S60 3rd Edition FP1 devices compatible yet?

IIRC, vanilla microSD cards max out at 2GB, yes. Rafe, can I pre-order an 8GB card on expenses, for testing purposes? 8-)

I use N95 and 6gB SanDisk MicroSDHC and it works perfectly

Reminds me of when I got my Psion 5mx, at which time a 32 MB CF card was not cheap. Years later I tried a 1 GB card in it, and it was perfectly happy (after Psion abandoned the market totally).

Since I see MicroSD cards being packaged with MiniSD adapters as well as full size SD adapters, they would physically fit in my E61. I read reports of mixed results with 4 GB cards...what is the largest that actually will work in an E61 (not 'i', and intentionally not upgraded beyond V2 firmware)?

So far, I have had months of 100% solid performance with a 2 GB SanDisk MiniSD card, and would not want to compromise reliability for more storage.

That's just simply not true.

This page states clearly the 6120 cannot take SDHC (i.e. above 2GB):
http://www.distantparts.com/2007/07/09/171/

and this page directly implies the 6120 can't - the SDHC cards have an explicit list of those phones that they do support, and the 6120 isn't among them.

I would also say, a lot of people are just on a mission to put ever bigger cards in their phones. Heck, if a 2 TB card came out, you'd want it, despite never filling it.
2GB is MORE than ample for most people most of the time.

I also think for the same reasons, 8GB cards are a plus for phones without the memory but not in any way, shape or form a minus for the N95 8GB - again, that is more than enough memory for almost everyone. Why do you want to carry around more data than that for goodness sake? (Even for a long journey to watch several films on - if you DivX a few DVDs you can get loads on an 8GB card, especially if you resize for the screen res.)

Why do you want to carry more than 8Gb? Errrrr, why do Apple make iPods larger than 8Gb? My music collection won't fit into 8Gb and once I have added my maps for TomTom, some Word documents/PDFs, a few movies and a left space for some 5MP photos, I will need 2 cards!

I'm positive that some people have successfully used 4 and 6GB microSD cards in the 6120 classic. For me; 2GB is only just about enough at the moment, and as soon as the 4GB versions become cheaper I will definitely get one for my 6120.

Rafe, if you need a second opinion ... 😉

That's a sweeping statement, and it really depends on how you use your device. Installing something like TomTom for instance (as I have) takes up a LOT of space for maps, voices and software - and I only have UK maps.

Add to that a selection of music, video and audio podcasts, etc., and a range of 3rd party software and it's really not difficult to use up all that space. I don't consider myself a heavy multi-media user (of my E90) - most of my listening is to podcasts which mostly get deleted once heard - but even with a very carefully selected and highly compressed music collection I've already used up over 3Gb of my 4Gb card.

One question I would ask of other users though: Both my original (Nokia branded) 1Gb card and my Sandisk 4Gb card became unreadable on my PC using the adapter, although both were still perfectly OK on the E90. Any ideas why this might be and/or how to avoid it / recover?

I can confirm that I have tried a Sandisk class2 MicroSDHC card in my Nokia 6120 classic and it WORKS. I am running firmware version 3.70 and it shows the full 4gb formatted capacity (3879mb useable space).
