What should the image size be on a 5 megapixel photo as my N95 is set at 5M but the image size is only on average about 480kb. I would have thought 5M images to be well over 1MB in size??
Any ideas? Is this not really 5M?

It is but i think it gets compacted down after its taken to conserve space. Try taking it from phone to computer if poss and see if its larger.

It depends on the image being taken. Very complex photos might be 1MB, simpler images a lot less. The vagaries of JPG compression etc.

True. JPEG is a very advanced blend of compression technologies. If you have large patches of the same colour the image will be smaller. Very diffuse/complex images will be larger
I do wish that there were options for different levels of compression though. I'd rather have images in the 1.5-2MB range to gain some more quality.
I agree it would be nice to select a compression level.
Having just bough a 6GB sandisk card, I'm not lacking space 😊
But it depends very much on the image - I just took som pictures in a forest with lots of leaves on both the ground and trees (=many details) most of them are about 1,75MB in size
But NOKIA should really allow you to set the compression level like you can on most digital cameras, especially since they allow you to set almost anything else.
