Roling Ball Demo (accelometer!)

guys,

The Accelerometer IS used by the camera to orientate the picture.

try to flip the camera around 180 (so the shutter button is on the bottom rather than the top) and then take a picture. Transfer the picture back to the PC. You will find that the picture has not flipped around the wrong way (as it should because the camera was flipped) - but is in the normal orientation.

The same goes for those portrait shots - the pictures it stores is already in portrait orientation rather than a sideways landscape.

There is no antishake component to the camera. This is proven by the night-shots and low-light conditions of the camera - if you dont have a 100% rock solid hand, then it will come out blurred (which Antishake should fix normally).

Would it be possible to add antishake via firmware upgrade?

what is this thing and why would it be good for the N95? sorry im not in the know of these things!

Its getting a silly discussion, I'm saying that the camera DOES have antishake, as you call it. If you read the specs of your camera you should have known.
If you want proof, have a look at http://thecreativelife.blip.tv/file/263008?filename=TheCreativeLife-NokiaN95VideoStabilisationTest597.flv

Now, once nokia decided to add an accelerometer to the phone to fight camera shake, it could use it (and probably is using it) to detect camera rotation.

I know that the camera does detect rotation, but for other camera's that do not try to fight the camera shake, an accelerometer is probably overkill and simpler systems could be used.

here are some examples others have said it could be used for.

auto switch the screen between landscape/portrait when you turn the phone.

how about shaking the phone to hit the snooze button when the alarm wakes you up in the morning.

gaming. tons of ideas for gaming, too many to list.

moving mouse while browsing the web.

the possibilities are endless. only if nokia would have integrated this into the firmware, they could have marketed the heck out of this phone from the start. now we have to wait and rely on 3rd party apps, which isnt a bad thing. but what was nokia thinking.

Umm.. I got a very funny idea in my head that there is a misunderstanding here of what image stablisation/anti shake is.. (especially from that video - which shows nothing more than someone trying to take a movie off a computer screen - and still be shaking/bouncing around)

Read this website for more details:

http://www.avecmobile.com/index.php?id=643

Its mainly used for high zoom or low-light conditions where the shutter needs to take a while to gather enough light before the picture is taken. When you are doing these shots, the lens are opened for longer period of time, meaning that if you do not have steady hands, you can slightly move the camera out of the position creating a blurr effect.

You can create some good night shots or low-light pictures with this technology without the use of a tripod or something..

As well as those two methods of stabilisation mentioned in the article, there is also the software method whereby the image is stretched to beyond the borders of the frame (a la digital zoom) and the software looks at the high contrast objects in the scene to judge how much the image needs to be shifted to keep it steady.

There is a plugin in Adobe Premiere that does this and I believe this is what the n95 does for its videos, hence all the warping of the image during stabilisation.

Yup. I like that one. But I still say it should howl in protest if you shake it too hard.😉

Wonder if someone can come up with a rolling marble game or something..

Has to be better than this.

I'm trying to install this and I get a certificate error...

What am I doing wrong?

Cheers, Paul.

Have you seen the S60 Touch promo video? In that, the user turns the phone over to disable the alarm.. I'm sure that would be feasible with the accelerometer in the N95.

Looks like Dr Jukka of drjukka.com has created or got hold of an inclinometer app that makes use of the acceleromter. Available from Mosh

The RotateMe 2.0 app is much more usefull:

http://www.bysamir.fr/rotateme/

I just noticed you can get the beta now if you donate.

I did, and am now enjoying auto-rotation, iPhone Style, on my N95

Just note that the app. is unsigned so you need to sign it yourself.

How long did it take cos I just donated (a worthy cause)

EDIT: Never mind, it just arrived. It's looking bloody good so far

Same here, donated and am enjoying auto-rotation 😊
Great app, even as beta working flawlessly.

I recommend to donate. We also should try to get Samir an N95 for testing - maybe Steve can help on this one.

Regards,
PM

Flicking the phone up or down to scroll up or down would be useful

Hi Biggzy,

it seems totally stable (until now), I tested it half a day now. There is no noticeable RAM-impact.

Regards,
PM

The RAM usage is about 100KB.

Please don't post the .sis here, because if ppl won't donate to get this great app now, why should they do it when the final version is released for free later this month? Remember this is the developers only chance to get money out of an app that most of us are going to use, so he is certainly welcome to my donation...

My thoughts exactly, which is why I have promoted this opportunity on various forums - I can't believe NOKIA did not include this functionality, they even knew the iPhone was one the way.

Thank god for 3rd party developers and an open system like Symbian

sh*t, iv deleted the email i got with the info about setting it as a system app, any1 care to copy/paste the info? thanx

Yeah I donated too and got it today. Problem is the link given regarding self-signing leaves me with a problem - to register on SymbianSigned you can't use any 'regular public domain' email addresses, so all 3 of mine have been rejected. Looks like I've fallen at the first fence. 😞

Can I ask what's the average of donation it should be ?

donated and received too - works very well so far without any negative effects. Excellent work!

For anyone who cant sign, let me know and Ill do it for you.

justnew wrote:Can I ask what's the average of donation it should be ?

Dunno about the average but I donated 10 euros. If the app is really as useful as it looks I may donate the same again. I figure if Samir was charging for it it would probable be somewhere between 10 - 20 euros anyway.

Im having problems installing the app after i have gone through the process of creating a signed version, i get an error 'certificate may not be valid, is expired or the phones date is wrong' i've generated it a few times and same error
