Hello,
I currently have an N80 on Orange. My contract is coming to an end.
I think I'm going to plump for an N95. Do Orange still cripple N Series with their own 'Active Standby' screen?
The best deal appears to be Vodafone. Does anyone have advice on how they have 'enhanced' the device?
I'm not too bothered if they've turned off VOIP.
I'm also not overly interested in changing product codes and doing all that.
Just plain simple N95 from the operator.
Any other advice would be welcome.
Cheers
Ive heard many things about O2 giving out generic phones rather than bastardised network ones. Im not sure if this is still the case though.
For the record, all UK networks are shite in terms of customer service. Im on vodafone, crap.
From all the people in the office, we have all the networks covered. They all seem to have very stupid/unwilling staff!
02 dont bastardize their phones their phones are unlocked already, the only thing they add is their own themes to the firmware logo as well as 02 active( which doesn't run unless you want it to), doesn't appear to be anything else added.
Cheers guys.
I see 02 are offering it now with an 8GB memory card and some pretty good tariffs.
Think this will most likely be the way I go!!
Cheers
I recommend you to wait till the N95 8gb will be released on O2 or T-Mobile.
Yeah but 02 is a sh*t network lol - i promised i would never ever go on them again after the crappy signal and service i got from them on contract.
Im on Orange but like you say, you dont wanna change the product code so that throws that out the window lol
Best thing is to check with a mate or family member who is on the same network in the same area, to see if they have signal.
Failing that, find the towns internet forum (they all seem to have one) and ask there.
You dont want to be stuck on a contract if you dont get signal at home.
I'll throw in a vote for T-mobile. Since I got my N95 on their network I have had strong signal everywhere, very reliable service and the staff have always been quick and knowledgable if I have had to call about anything. I've been on every UK network in the last 3 years and T-mobile customer service is far and away the best. PLUS their customised firmware is nothing more than a web n walk logo instead of the little globe for the browser so no RAM-sapping crap.
Did you know you can turn active standby off?

On my N80 I don't actually have the Orange standby screen I got it the week it came out and it seemed to be free of it.
My bro got an N73 after me and he's got the Orange standby screen. You can turn it off but you can't have the Nokia one instead..well not when I've tried anyway.
If you know how to get the Nokia one to appear that would be great
I've been mostly happy with T-Mobile - their firmware customisation is extremely light and they don't strip out any features. They also have Flext + Web'n'Walk, which is a combination of a good phone tarriff with decent value Internet access, and an N95 without a data plan loses many features unless you're usually in WiFi range.
Yeah when i got my first orange it had the customised active display (which in fairness i actually liked more than the default one lol) but then my phone broke, i got a new one, and it had the default on it, even though it was an orange branded phone 😉

Just my 2 cents worth here my sis just got an N95 shes on O2 and im on Voda side by side i have 2/3 bars 3G sis had none. Manchester (not in city).
My Opinion T-Mobile if you dont wanna change the product code.
Crispy
thought o2 started locking their phones. You cant just put a vodafone sim in an o2 phone....
orange and voda are the cheapest n95 network offer at the mo but disable voip functions you also do not get the daft homescreen anymore.
you might be as well getting a sim free one, you will automatically get the settings plus all the voip etc etc
or better still get it unbranded by product code etc it is worth it then you always get the best and latest software....it simple to do

O2 are really expensive when it comes to data downloads. £3 per MB last time I checked.
I just got my N95 8GB from Vodaphone. their 3.5G is reallllllly fast, and their package rates aren't bad, just working on unlocking the phone now.

Hi Berty, PLEASE let us know as soon as you make some progress!
Thank you 😉
I've been with o2 since the beginning (Genie) and have always been impressed with their service. Tariffs are good, customer services are very good and I've never had problems with getting a signal. My work phone is with Orange and they are crap. I can't get a signal at home (Bristol) and also can't get a signal on the M1 pretty much from Sheffield to Leeds.
Also, o2 phones aren't locked. I've tested an Orange SIM and it worked fine (apart from crap signal).
Im shocked that Im sayin this as a bit of an O2 fanboy but T-Mobile have really surprised me since I got the N95 from them... been pretty good all round and only the browser icon has been adopted by them for tweeking in the firmware it seems.
I used to be on O2 but have been with T-mobile for 18 months now and I really like them. Their internet is decent as well.
The mobile providers arn't up to speed the new smart phones. With my N95 plugged into a TV and a bluetooth keyboard it's nearly like browsing with a normal computer. But browsing at mobile rates are prohibly expensive. So if your out and about maybe a wihi account maybe better (also you can use your skype account).
PS I would tell you some good wifi accounts but I'm not allowed
I'll tell you some good wifi accounts... Free ones! 😉 heh heh
This is an interesting thread as I am about to upgrade from an N80 on Three to an N95 on....
...probably t-mobile.
I need unlimited data access (and I only use a moderate amount of texts/voice) and their Flext/WebnWalk tariff seems to be as reasonable as anybody's at the moment:
22.50 per month for unlimited (that's 1gb) data, and any combination of 170/340 minutes/texts. Handset comes in at 129.99.
I'm reading reasonable things about t-mobile's customers services - certainly sounds better than the 'conversations' I've been having with three's offshore call centres...
Anybody spotted anything better?
Im with T-Mobile and you have to be VERY careful with data.
Im on a flext plan with no data tarrif and saw the adverts stating that if you use data it will cost you no more that 1 per day.
Imagine my suprise when I recieved a bill with a 13 charge for data for using 1.6mb (Thats right mb not gb).
When I phoned to inform them where they could insert this charge, they told me that the 1 max per day is only applicable to pay as you go! and for contract accounts the charge is 73p per kb
Anyway, got the charge refunded after:
1: Explaining that is barely 1 or 2 websites worth of data
2: Asking where on their website/terms it states payg only
3: telling them to sue me because they aint getting it
4: Telling them that I will give them more that 13 worth of bad publicity
So, for data on T-Mobile, probably better to opt for one of the addons

The chances are if you would played on two and it was genuinely missing the payg only then they would have refunded if you had sent an e-mail. This is so easy to class as an "Official Complaint" where as a telephone call doesn't necessarily. Making an official complaint is the first step to getting trading standards and/or of-com ( Ive done this before with another provider ) to intercede. As soon as I mentioned this they refunded the extra costs plus more.
They wont care about 1) if your not on a data plan they will bend you over the desk. Quite simply if they don't believe you and it was simply a misunderstanding they don't have to offer you anything.
3) They wont sue you at all. They will simply terminate the contract, immobalise the phone and then you will be credit defaulted which I will tell you now you really don't want. You pay line rental for one month in advance so they have rearlly only lost the unbilled usage. Not only will you fail to get another mobile contract on any network but it will affect you for years to come.
4) I doubt they will care sorry 😉
Usually if its a small amount the networks will do it as a good will gesture. Customer appeasement over £13 isn't worth their time.
Well I thought I'd let you know my phone choice in the end.
Went into phones4u and played on the 8gb. It is wicked but seemed a lot bigger than n95 and a bit slippy in the hand (mr litchfield was right), plus it was 45 a month which was a no no budget wise.
Was all set for T-Mobile when Orange decided to offer me free n95 and 25 a month line rental so I wouldn't leave
I guess I'll have to get my hands dirty with product codes etc but the price difference over the 18month contract was too good to refuse!!
Arrives tomorrow!!
Thanks for all your advice it was most appreciated.
Crucially, do you get a data allowance?
I've said it before but an N95 without an unlimited (or very large) data package is like an Aston Martin, limited to 30mph
If you want it unlocked, o2. (My last 3 phones from them were unlocked).
Any phone you can debrand quite easily. Even with o2 being less branded than other networks, there is still some minor changes, built in bookmarks etc, so you will be a little behind on firmware updates. (For my w950, they are still miles behind, thats unbranded now).
The rest is down to call plan etc, the previous was obviously best for me. As for data, not much options either the include 1mb a month and then I think £2.35mb, or pay £7.50 a month for "unlimited" (200mb...)
hi, thought id leav a wee comment,
i have a o2 contract and an orange contract! o2 contract is 300 minz and 750 txt's for 20 and orange is 600 minz and unlimated txts for 25
O2:
allways had good coverage, cant really complain..
thing i didnt like is you cant get delivery reports with o2,(well i know u can if u type"*0#" at the start of a message but wot a pain everytime)
Orange:
has the best signal coverage, but not reliability, mast usualy goes down 1 a month for a day! tis a pain but i fon up customer services and complain and i get reimbursed!! got 30 reimbursed last month!
love the easy delivery reports but the thing that i am raging about is that you dont pay 4 delivery reports on pay as you go but u get chaged for them on a contract!! fooking redicolous!!
would say o2 has beter customer service and they get things sorted out, but the good thing about oranges crappy customer service is that they know they are shitt and just palm u off with money!!
thak from that wot u will.......
hope it helps
steven😊
