Also part of a whole new Google Mail (on the Web) application, there's a new Google Contacts manager now out. What's now needed, guys, is a SyncML server so that we can sync S60 (and UIQ) smartphone contacts and calendar entries directly to Google's PIM data. At which point, who needs Microsoft Outlook? At all?
Read on in the full article.
Steve, I get an "Forbidden" on the link.
Regarding SyncML, I agree with you totally. There should be choices other then Microsoft software.
The link works for me, but it shows my google contacts, so I suspect it will only work for those with a gmail account.
I totally agree. Google needs to implement sync between Google stuff and the mobile phone. There are already some free over the air services which work well for a backup in addition to or in place of Outlook sync however we should really be seeing Google offering Calendar & Contacts sync, at least. Ideally Google Notebook and maybe even some Docs exchange.
As it stands I don't use Google's calendar, I periodically import to GMail Contacts and export from Google Notebook. Some key documents I upload to Google Docs. It's all manual & it could all be so different...

Be patient, it'll happen soon enough! And if they implement IMAP Idle that will give Gmail push capabilities as well. And then no-one will need Exchange either!

It is now possible to sync both email and Gmail contacts using EMOZE. Calendar is not there yet, but will be very soon.

I've seen a couple of solutions and tried one for syncing Google's Calendar with Outlook* - it messed up my calendar when I tried it although they may by now have ironed out the bugs. I'd prefer an in-house/supported & comprehensive solution. Pre-Gmail I had a Yahoo account which offered Intellisync** to synchronise contacts, notes & calendar with Outlook. It worked flawlessly for me. Of course Outlook is the conduit between my mobile and online. On the other end, Nokia Sync works very well (except for the Files & Folders sync, work to be done there). I prefer the usability of Google Mail but until there's an all-in-one sync solution, whether it's over-the-air SyncML or via Outlook, it's otherwise a step back being with Google.
* GooSync. The premium service will sync Contacts too.
** I think this is called Autosync now.

Goosync Premium does NOT sync Gmail contacts, it only syncs with its own contacts database. You still need to manually import Gmail contacts into GooSync each time. It only syncs the Calendar.
Emoze has just released native support for Gmail email and contacts, and it works perfect, besides giving push email and being free. And it syncs directly with your Gmail account, no Outlook or PC connector required.
Whilst this Contacts Manager is a move forward, as a business user I need the ability to sort by surname. Until that arrives I have no option but to stay with Outlook. I must admit that is a shame as I could really take advantage of an on-line address book.
One of the biggest frustrations of many Nokia smart phone/Symbian users, who also use GMail (or Google Apps) is having to run back to Outlook in order to sync their contacts and calendar.
There are some applications that can do one or the other... maybe, but why not combine into one?
This is supposed to be a mobile/wireless world now. So, why cannot someone come up with one full-featured application for Symbian phones that syncs with Google Calendar AND with the Contacts in GMail (or Google Apps.)?
It seems like the obvious product and no one is asking that it be "free". A fair price would be expected.... "you get what you pay for."
Thanks to anyone working on this project!
Michael in Maine😉
Goosync now syncs google contacts..just FYI for those as frustrated as i in getting their up-to-date contact info online and on their mobile....
