TOM TOM 510 - Nokia N80

18 replies · 5,626 views · Started 05 November 2007

hi I have a TOMTOM 510 GPS Navigation device already with the UK map in it.
and I understand that the Nokia N80 (with latest fw) supports GPS sat-nav.

what i don't understand is that, does the N80 ACT as a TOMTOM?
or just link it via bluetooth and make calls with ur gps, etc...

if it does act as a TOM TOM do i still need to pay? even though i have already paid for my maps when i bought the tom tom 510?

please reply if you know or have any ideas or confirmations or just advice
desperately needed

thanks you

I was under the impression that the TOMTOMs that connected to phones just allowed you to use the tomtom as a basic handsfree device... so you'd see who was calling you, answer it etc etc and use the extra tomtom services by using your phone to connect to tomtom HQ.

ewwwww really is that it?
you could do that with any mobile which has got bluetooth...
lol well with N95 being able to be a sat-nav device i thought that N80 could do the same.

Any smart phone can be a SatNav - just like it can be an MP3 player - it just needs the right software.

For the N80 to work as SatNav (as mine happily does), you need to get TomTom navigator 6 and a bluetooth GPS.
The N95 is touted as a sat-nav device because the GPS is built into the phone.

I personally don't understand why Smartphone owners go and buy separate sat-nav - the software for the phone is cheaper than a dedicated unit - and you're much less likely to leave your phone in the car. At least I think so!

Why would you pay for bluetooth connection between phone and receiver?

I dont think he's really got a handle on how this works yet?!

No, you wont have to pay to connect via bluetooth... I cant think of anything where you do have to pay to connect via bluetooth........Once you got your external GPS sorted your good to never get lost again... :icon14:

could you pm me and send me a link or something? that'd be really helpful! thank you

I'd add look for GPS with Sirf III chips in - they're not as new now but offer faster TTFF (i.e. lock) than the older chips.

Whats the new ones after SIRF III then?? I thought that was the latest??

They are (well mine is) pretty fast TTFF.. and its tiny too... love it.

Could you throw in your model number? I'm thinking about buying one, and happy customers are best advice 😊.

Yes Sirf III is the latest (at least I think so) - sorry for the confusion!

I personally think too having a separate GPS helps for those wierd cars with coatings on windshields - I know they can cause problems (so you can put separate receivers on parcel shelves).

Just making sure: is map 680.1536 newer than 680.1466 or do the numbers stand for something else than version?
