So... does N95's S60 get "registry" bloated / cluttered after some use?

Hi.

I'm new to the Symbian world and I was wondering exactly that. In Windows flavors (Desktop, Mobile, etc.) you have the registry and a zillion of distributed files that are modified / created on demand / duplicated, etc. under regular use, after installation of different aps.

Now, in this little N95's Symbian, does the same apply? Does it have a "registry" hive or some central DB that gets bloated? Does uninstallation TOTALLY remove the application? If so, then, how trials work? You know... after X days it stops working, you uninstall it, reinstall it and if it still doesn't work then that's because it left something behind after uninstallation!

yeah i'd like to know that. I wonder if there is a reg editor for Symbian Operating Systems

but i've noticed clearing away the useless applications (put there to encouraging users to download all that high margin, high cost Kb data transfer costs), that the phone seems to be operating smoother and faster.

Thisis definately an interesting question. I installed the trial of irRemote but as I had the beta, which has now expired, the full app is saying exired too (which sucks). I assume there is some kind of registry which is telling it this as I uninstalled the beta

There is a 'registry' yeah..... If your struggling installation for a new program then its possible that an orphaned file is blocking that installation...

There is a form of register, as I once deleted a whole stack of folders on a memory card and cleared some apps but screwed up some others. And then I couldn't delete the folders at all. So had to format the card to clear those that were installed on the card. Not sure whether this means there is a registry on the phone. That said, a firmware upgrade sorted it out and wiped everything. 😊

I believe each program has it's own settings file, but no common registry. When uninstalling the developer can choose to leave some info behind, to prevent multiple trial testings aso.

If this is correct, S60 devices shouldn't be slowed down by now uninstalled apps like the MS platform does. Only thing to slow it down is if a LOT of files are left on the device by multiple uninstalls.

This is just (qualified?) guessing, so please correct me if you know better.

there is still a registry or what is loosely termed as a registry but its not one as your PC's is. The data you are talking about I assume are the oprhaned files, which may be limiting the reinstallation or installation of an upgrade. They have a flag set..

Have a quick look on symbian.com dev forums / wiki if you wanna know more.
