N82 - all good bits of N95 classic and N958GB rolled into one.

The N82 has just been released.

It has all the functions of the N95 that I can see - GPS, multimedia, accelerometer, 5MP camera, TV out, 3.5mil jack while eliminating most of the bad points.

Namely, the build quality in some, by simply not being a slider phone.

The memory, it comes with 100MB.

The battery is 1050mAh, with a rated talktime of 190min WCDMA or 260min GSM. Standby 210 hours WCDMA and 225 hours GSM. We will have to wait and see what the realtime is like once people have used it.

Lens cover. Many people felt this was a bad thing to leave out for a 5MP camera on the 8GB version.

Expandable memory. Again, many people felt this was a good thing and a drawback of the N95 8GB.

And of course, the edition of the xenon flash.

Heres more specs: http://www.nseries.com/nseries/v3/media/sections/products/tech_specs/en-R1/tech_specs_n82_en_R1.html

And the general N82 page: http://web.nseries.com/nseries/#l=products,n82

Is it released in England?? The N-series site doesnt seem to think so..

It wont be yet (which is good as it puts me off buying it), but I daresay you can get it from other places, including ebay which is what I did with my 6110 before it came out here.

Mind you, to anyone thinking of doing that, be extremely careful as this sort of thing is the most scammed item on ebay.

the wifes on at me to replace her N80... so that looks like a logical step... hope its here before Xmas then.

May have all the features, but isn't it the size of a brick? 😊

Classic N95 dimensions:

Volume: 95 cc
Weight: 124 g
Length: 99 mm
Width: 53 mm
Thickness (max): 20.5 mm

N82:

Volume: 90 cc
Weight: 114 g
Length (max): 112 mm
Width (max): 50.2 mm
Thickness (max): 17.3 mm

So its longer, but a bit slimmer and a lot thinner. And weighs less. So no, not a brick at all.

thinner... thats all Im bothered about now a days... I hate fat phones, and the fatty N95 gets a bit annoying in smart trousers sometimes... although its not as fat as some Nokias... 😉

I imagine they got rid of some weight + size from doing without the slider mechanisim. Which tbh, wasnt really needed in the first place. Impo, it caused more problems than it solved.

I quite like being able to slide away the keypad, makes locking easier and protects the keypad but the two way slide was just pointless. I never use the media keys and with autorotate installed I don't need to use the slider to switch to landscape mode.
Also, I suspect the two way slide is the cause of the wobbly slider issue so many people get.

According to the specifications:

"Up to 100MB internal dynamic memory* for messages, ringing tones, images, video clips, calendar notes, to-do list and applications"

That sounds like the internal storage, rather than the RAM for running applications. There is no mention of the size of RAM on that specification.

Yep, it is. Although Im sure its 128, as thats the way ram works. However, I wouldnt be suprised if the 8MB is used for something.

It was leaked, most noteably on symbian freak, but its not exactly leaked today as its now on the nseries site.

no your right... the page I read was dated yesterday... 😉 OOpps!

It does seem like 128mb ram, with 90mb still available. Looks like they made a nicer looking multi-media menu and very good use of RotateMe.

I wonder how long the battery of this thing lasts; RotateMe, despite being an excellent app, put a lot of drain on the battery. I'm thinking this was due to the screen orienting itself everytime the phone was rotated.

Heres a very good blog on it. Bear in mind he had the prototype model.

http://meandmyphones.blogspot.com/2007/11/nokia-n82-impressions-after-week.html

Its a brilliant blog with what most people want - side by side comparisions.

Also, he had this to say about batterylife-

Battery life (BP-6MT) is very decent. It still holds 2 bars after taking 40 photos (about 20 with flash), 1/2 hour GPS usage, 100 SMS's, 1 hour's worth of 3G usage, 20 minutes' worth of voice calls and 1 hour of web surfing over wifi.

I knew I'll want it since I saw the specs, as soon as they leaked on the net. Add QWERTY keyboard and it would be absolutely PERFECT.
But unfortunately although it ticks all the boxes at the beginning will be probably bloody expensive and not worth to sell my N95 to buy it.

Can someone confirm that it has the Navi-wheel like the N81?

Thanks

I JUST ordered the Nokia N95 US version (longer battery life, more memory etc etc) from Tiger Direct and now this phone comes out...

I wonder how the N82 compares to the N95 US version. I want a phone that will be good for world wide use, travel, blogging, pictures etc etc.

I really hope I made the right choice on the N95 with what I have in mind. My travels through Japan will be SO much better if I can take pictures and blog my journey as I am going along for friends and family to see...

I don't get the N95 till monday so I still can return it if this turns out to be better...

Can you tell me what this autorotate is please? and where I might find it - thanks

3Shirts wrote:It is a freeware app being developed by a guy called Samir. It is currently in beta testing and if you donate to him (even just a quid) he will send you the builds as he makes them (unsigned though, you need to be able to self sign). The full app is aiming for release at the end of the month.
There is a thread discussing it here: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/66163/&highlight=rotateme

And the guy's website is here: http://www.bysamir.fr/rotateme/

Cool - thanks for that
