Networking with bluetooth

I know the usual way of using bluetooth is to connect a laptop to internet via bluetooth and a gprs phone. But what if I want to do the other way around, connect my P800 to a local LAN using bluetooth.

I would like to be able to browse my intranet with the phones internet browser without going all the way around the internet using GPRS. It also would be cool to play some streaming mp3-music over bluetooth 😃

I already have a bluetoothcard in my laptop that is able to share a network connection but I can not find any settings in the phone that makes this possible.

This has been discussed in www.esato.com

Initially, you had to download Webviewer from Reqwireless. It still works better than the built in borwser for now...

But I found that all you have to do is create a new internet account, call it Bluetooth or something. Set is to connect via GPRS, but don't fill out any fields. Then create a WAP account to use this new Bluetooth Internet account... Then connect your phone to your laptop via BT Serial Port.

Open the Internet Browser on the P800 and surf... the phone may show the GPRS globe...but it won't be connected to anything, and won't show any data transfer...the Bluetooth icon should show activity.

Or, the simple way is to use Webviewer as stated above...just connect eh BT serial port, and surf....Webviewer automatically detects and uses any available connection. 😊

Let's just hope the Opera upgrade for the P800 will allow this by default as well.

Actually I think people are lying or something 😃 😉

If I create a Internet Account with GPRS _without_ filling anything out, my P800 still connects to the internet. The default GRPS account in the P800 (which is there after a reset or when you bought the phone) connects to the internet though GPRS as well, and nothing is filled out there.

I can't figure out how people actually can make this work :P

Maybe I've having some AI sim card or something which reports how the phone whould use the GPRS, I don't know :P

Here in Sweden (home of Ericsson 😉 ) we have a GSM network provider named Telia. Their GPRS connection does not need any parameters in the phone to work, maybe your provider have the same settings ie default phone settings.

Just one small correction,This has been discussed on www.allaboutsymbian.com forums, and it was firstly discovered that it worked on the nokia 7650.
It is allmost the same about he p800.
Search the p800 forum for some tips and hints on the subject.

The question is not wether the P800 can initiate a connection to the PC, but wether it is able to create a TCP/IP stack and act as node in the LAN via Bluetooth. I doubt it, but don't own a P800, so can't answer this question myself.
If this has been discussed in another thread, then please point to the thread instead of the whole forum server (which isn't very helpful).

Basically, to make it work with the built-in browser, what I do is load 1 page in the built-in browser over GPRS, then I disconnect from GPRS and delete my INTERNET ACCOUNT SETTINGS, then enable my Bluetooth connection with my PC, then when I go to the built-in browser and start loading a page, the browser won't find any internet account settings and connect through BT in stead. Hope this helps.

Yep, I'm using Telia (live in Stockholm 😊)

But it works now!! I installed the new PC Suite and it worked wham bam out of the box :P

I can use bluetooth to connect to my pc and browse the internet using my cable modem connection. I use opera and did not have to create a dummy bluetooth account. As long as bluetooth is on and the bluetooth serial connection is activated it works perfectly no gprs logo shows up just the bluetooth one.

I have a desktop PC upstairs and a laptop I use downstairs each fitted with an epox bluetooth dongle. I use bluetooth to create a LAN so I can surf the internet on my laptop using the cable modem connected to my desktop pc. I can use the laptop downstairs with no problems. If I take the P800 downstairs though I loose my connection. It goes no where near as far as 2 bluetooth dongles.

Also should it be possible to print to my printer connected to my desktop pc, from the laptop over a bluetooth lan. I have enabled printer sharing but cannot see the printer from the laptop. The printer is connected to the pc via USB.

Because the range of the P800 serial com port seems so poor, I have tried connecting it to the laptop via bluetooth, which is connected to the desktop server via bluetooth. This does not work, does anyone know if this should be possible.

If you can answer any of these questions I would be very grateful.

Cheers
Chewie

what will be the max. data tranfer speed of using bluetooth for browsing through the internet (not the gprs or wap) when linked to the pc?

Ordered one of these:

So I'll be trying to get it working with the P800 over easter weekend, fingers crossed... 😮

a bluetooth router or internet access point will not work with the current
solution for the p800 - in fact it only works if you have pc suite installled on a windows pc. pc suite (m-router) acts as a router for the p800 with the m-router-protocoll (that is ppp/ip/tcp)

Well I was getting one anyway (slightly cheaper), and it's intended for using on my ethernet network, so it's not the end of the world :-?

But I'll give it a try of course - even if it's impossible 😃
