Earlier I emptied my battery downloading some podcasts over wifi (silly of me I know) but now I cannot charge it at all. It won't turn on and doesn't recognise the charger (which I know is working).
Any ideas?

I had problems before with charging and Nokia repaired it (or did they?!)

Im gonna say no... they didnt... what they did was implement a workaround ...

so you may need to take it back.. never heard of it myself.. could it beanything to do with the battery contacts etc??

Do you have a spare battery to try??

Well I took it out and left it for a bit and then popped it in and left it connected and after about 5 minutes it started charging. I will keep an eye on it and get the battery tested at the weekend at my friendly neighbourhood service center

nowt to do with your charger is it?? Mine only works at a certain angle 😡

I don't think so, it is a brand new one I bought for the office and only a week old! It worked on my colleagues phone but it could be a dodgy angle thing and I got lucky when trying his phone. Why did you change the charger design Nokia?!

Sometimes when the battery has completely discharged, I have noticed mine takes a good few minutes of being plugged in before it actually shows as charging. I looked around the web when this happened to mine the first time and the general consensus was that it was 'normal'.

Thanks mate, thats a bit of a weight off!

I think this is probably the way it works: when you boot up the phone, it always uses the battery, even if it's plugged in. If the phone is running normally, then the power management systems are operational and it will switch to running off the mains power when available. However, if there isn't enough power in the battery to start the phone up, you can't turn it on until it's charged sufficiently.

If so, it would be somewhat similar to the situation in a car. The starter motor needs sufficient battery voltage to actually start the car, and the car won't start without it. Once the engine is going, the car's power systems run off the alternator, but if the battery is flat you have to charge it a bit before you can start the car at all. It's not a perfect analogy, but it kinda works.

I doubt that the phone runs permanently off the battery while the mains continually tops it up, incidentally - that would kill the battery unnecessarily.
