The N95 / N95 8GB debate rumbles on

Following on from my own pros-cons piece on the issue, PseudoFinn has penned a superbly detailed breakdown of his own observations of each device. Definitely plenty of food for thought whichever way you decide to go. The increased RAM is amazing though - I switched to Web just now on the N95 8GB and discovered a Web session from last week. It had just been hanging around in the background 8-)

Would I be correct in saying that assuming you can handle the smaller screen and no music buttons the N82 gives the best of both worlds with no disadvantages or does that have some negatives too ?

The N82 does look rather good. And no ribbon cable to break or slide to fail!

But the screen is a lot smaller and those keypad buttons....

I wonder just how much this "opinion" will change when the new firmware appears that hopefully gives "on-demand paging" to the earlier models. Would this make the N95-1 just as nimble?

I've also read in various places that the "8gb" is "underclocked" compared to the N95-1 and even though they have the same speed processor, various benchmarks show the "8gb" to be slower. That makes me think that some, if not most, of the "extra" power capacity is simply because it's using far less anyway. Shame no-one can really write a cpu speed modifier for the N95 to see if this would be the case (I had such a thing for my old Qtek 9100 and just slowing it down slightly for most applications made a whopping difference to the battery life with little effect on overall performance). Just a thought.

I still see one important setback on the N95 8GB - It has no camera slider. How can Nokia make a phone with such a good camera and still expose the lens to scratches and other damage? i really don't get it.
As long at the N95 8GB does not have a slider, I'll stick to my N95.

To add to what Taomyn said, I believe at a recent mobile show in the UK, Nokia demonstrated Demand Paging on the n95-1. And if I remember correctly, with demand paging, the n95-1 booted up with free ram of about 32 MB, as against the standard 20 MB. Also, logically demand paging is supposed to improve on battery life drain.

So my question is - if demand paging is introduced to the n93-1, can we expect it to have the better RAM and battery as was demostrated by Nokia? And perhaps still ensure that it is attractive for people to buy, if they don't want the 8 GB version.

Hi all,

Well having owned an original N95 and now owning a N95 8GB even if the original does get demand paging and it increases free Ram by 50% to 30mb approx this is still only a third of the free Ram available on the N95 8GB. No one is denying it will be great for the original N95 owners but it is still no where close to the N95 8GB. The same goes for battery life as again any improvement will of course be welcome and good but it will still have a 25% smaller battery as well as a smaller screen.

The argument that some make re being able to remove memory cards and there increased size is of course valid, but for me at least 8GB is more than sufficient to carry a choice of Music and Video and i would rather be stuck with the 8GB memory and more installed and free Ram with of course the larger improved screen then the ability to swap memory cards.

But of course what is right and suits me may not be right for anyone else but given the choice of keeping my N95 8GB or swapping it for an original N95 with two 8GB cards there is no way i would swap.
