N82, N95 8GB and Kaiser added to the Grid

Forgive the (now) monthly plug, but I've added the Nokia N82, N95 8GB and (non Symbian) HTC Kaiser/TyTN II to my infamous 'choose your perfect smartphone' grid. And hey, the iPhone's in there too, comments welcome on any unusual winners!

Read on in the full article.

I am in the states, so for N95 8gb runner up I would go for N95-3 US 3G and the winner is ...... Nokia E90😊

I do feel that the scores for the iPhone are quite unfair..Third party softwares are coming with the development of Apple's SDK..User interface is a big point and the table doesn't highlight it..and as for price, its subject to countries..I got mine for 430 US.. The functionality of Maps isn't added in the point "GPS and functionality".

And as and when third party apps are actually possible and appear, I'll gladly update the table. For now they're a no-no. A SIM-free iPhone for $430??? Details, please!! And the iPhone has no built-in maps. It simply uses Google's online maps, just as with Google Maps for any other phone in the entire world.

great chart! i came out with the n95 8gb, exactly the phone i've ordered a month ago and am still waiting for to arrive at my door. i do have some comments, especially on the differences between the n95 8gb and the normal n95;

both phones get a '10' for gps, but i've read on several spots, that the location of the gpschip in the 8gig is better, and you get much better locks, indoors etc.

can you explain the difference in robustness and software stability between the 2 phones? (i guess the difference in robustness is because of the slippery back of the 8gig?)

how come the n95 scores '8' at multitasking? as long as firmware v21 isn't out, everone gets an out-of-memory message really soon.

Have to agree with the N95 8GB having better GPS, mine locks on indoors before I even have a chance to cancel the 'network usage disabled' warning, my normal N95 takes at least 20 seconds. Both use A-GPS but the N95 8GB locks on really really quick.

Nice chart!

As far as the Kaiser is concerned, I certainly disagree with Video playback's having 8 points. It, currently, has a VERY bad firmware making it impossible to play back non-transcoded (high-res) movies, as opposed to almost all the other, non-outdated, Windows Mobile or Symbian models on the list (assuming you use CorePlayer to play back your movies). Video playback is the last thing I'd use it for - along with gaming (which it sucks at too).

Let me also strongly disagree with the TI OMAP Windows Mobile devices' (Touch, Vox) battery life (see "Battery life and options"😉. They are FAR better than that of the Qualcomm / Xscale-based, 3+G Kaiser and the Athena / x7500. I've been using a Vox for quite some time (along with a lot of other Symbian and Windows Mobile devices) and find it having extraordinaly good battery life - as was the case with the HTC Wizard (another TI OMAP-based device). It, IMHO, certainly deserves 10 points.

(I have no personal experience with the Touch' battery life. Given that it's based on the TI OMAP architecture, it can't be that bad either - much be, as with the Vox, vastly superior to that of the non-TI-based and/or 3G-enabled models on the list.)

Not true, a N95 with v12 firmware is identical in this dept.

No, it's because of the camera shutter versus unprotected glass

As long as you stay away from big Web pages, I don't agree, actually. The N95 still acquits itself quite well.

The chart refers to playing back properly formatted QVGA WMV videos, not desktop-res DivX rips 8-)

Good feedback, thanks, I haven't used these devices for more than a few days, I'll amend the ratings!

What is the meaning of the 'Database' line - with zero ('0'😉 in every column ?

I guess that comes from the fact that none of the devices has a built-in database application, and, therefore, this line has no effect on the final scores.

However, if someone (like me - addicted to Psion Data years ago ..) absolutely requires some kind of a database (and is even willing to pay good money for one), then one would like to see that essential requirement to have some effect on the final scores - e.g. this line could reflect the selection and quality of third-party database apps (and the same could apply to other applications, too - if two devices have equally abysmal calendar, but for one there is a good third-party replacement, then that device deserves better score).

Yeah, I leave that line in, in the vain hope that a manufacturer will ship a database with a device - I fully agree with you. If Nokia or similar does this, they automatically get a 10 in this row 8-)
