antxxxx wrote:. right click on the softaware updater icon and select 'run as administrator' and try that
I did try that trick but got the same crashing result.
I gave up and used an XP machine and all went smoothly, in fact I was surprised how quick and painless it was. Having done a restore the only things that were lost were are my settings for "Tracker" but that probably needed a good tidy up anyway so I am not that bothered.

thx, so no problems or bugs to appear if I roll it back 😊
3Shirts wrote:That's what I do but it just annoys me having a folder full of applications I NEVER use. Seems kinda silly to have a folder on my menu which is literally pointless
Well, not that we can have multi-level folders, you don't even have to waste one of the 9 spaces at the root menu level - create a sub folder in one of the less busy folders and hide all the junk in there 😊

That's a good idea, simple, but effective.
I preferred the old menu, just a folder for Tools and Apps. It would be nice if you could delete the default folders in the new firmware.
Overall this update is fantastic, well done to Nokia.
I have one minor problem, the USB connection is always recognised. It has been intermittant since the update. Normally a reboot sorts it but it will be interesting to see if this is a problem caused by this latest update. Let me know if you have the same problem?

Good thinking. I'll do that

Ditto, had to restart the phone 3 times at one point to get the USB connection fired up, cousin had problems connecting too.
Also I just noticed a 'Circles' visualisation that has been added to the music player.
Oh and finally we get video ringtones, mentioned earlier in the thread; I've set the Indian Fonejacker clip for the Outdoor profile
Downloaded and installed the new firmware. Works everything without a problem.
Backup works fine too.
The following programs where not reinstalled by backup. I had to install them manually again:
- Truphone
- F-Secure
- Y-Task
- PuTTY

Hehe, why do people still bother with this

Hey, with all the free RAM now, what's it matter? There's loads of space to install completely useless software now, without it impacting upon performance. 😉
Thank you Nokia.. I must say, the phone is *ALMOST* complete!
It is the best phone I have ever had to date and the only one that does not stop giving (eg. Demand Paging, accelerometer, AGPS etc etc).
I can NOW comfortably use the Web Browser like what it was designed for- without the out of memory errors of the page faults it would cause with the other background applications. With newer versions of the value add software (eg Mail for exchange, Sports tracker etc) - this phone just is perfect.
HOWEVER..
One complaint so far since V11 firmware is the Flash player on the phone. I have got some SWF files locally on the phone that I use to entertain my toddler with (children's nursery rhythms). V11 displayed these SWF perfect - as good as the PC displays them. V12 will be very similar - but SLOWWWWSSS down when the going gets tough with music and sounds all out of sync. V20 however pulls it down to 40% speed of the original!
Has anyone else noticed a problem with Flash player as well? When are we going to get Flash 3 that will fix this issue and give us Youtube? I heard that TCPMP has got a module out for the Windows Mobile that allows this already!
It looks like Flash Lite 3.0 won't be available for us until Q1 2008...

Excellent theme. Thank you 😊
Aurial wrote:Anyone got any ideas about how I can keep my text messages without having to use the in-phone Backup or the PC Suite Content Copier?
If you change the message settings to store all messages in the Memory Card instead of Phone memory, you should also get asked if you want to copy existing messages to the Memory card.
After you upgrade the FW, you should then be able to set the message app to use the Memory Card and the N95 should display all your old messages.
Steve_R wrote:I have always suffered on all firmwares from random wifi disconnects, and this v20 seems no different, but it's something that I can live with.
What router do you have?
I have a 2 year old Netgear router, and the N95 was always unreliable using it.
However as soon as I updated the FW in the Router my N95 connections became rock solid.
I recommend you check you are on the latest router firmware...
brittonc wrote:OK, so updated to v20 without any problems but now I can't do a restore. It gets to about 73% and hangs. Not moved in 20 mins and the CPU is running flat out. Will be well hacked off if I have lost everything I backed up! Any ideas??
NEVER EVER restore a backup file after upgrading FW.
You can safely use PC Suite Synchronisation app but don't restore a backup
You say that, but I have done it three times now (10->11, 11->12 and now 12->20) and it has worked perfectly every time
dez_borders wrote:NEVER EVER restore a backup file after upgrading FW.You can safely use PC Suite Synchronisation app but don't restore a backup
I always restore the backup file after a FW upgrade and NEVER had any problems with it.
I'm with dez on this one. I used to think it was ok as well, but sometime I've found some of the problems with one firmware get transfered to a newer firmware. Where they're been fixed on the new firmware. If that makes sense!
i also restore backups ... no problems.
I think, I'll stick with the the backup and restore method until I see a problem as it saves SOOO much time
I'm not entirely sure as I always start afresh everytime I update the firmware, but I think the backup/restore method is more likely to be OK if all your apps are installed on phone memory?
It could also depend on what apps/themes you have installed.
So yeah, backup/restore may be OK for some, but the result may vary a lot from user to user. Reinstalling all apps is the only way to guarantee NOT to cause problems.

Fair enough, maybe it does work for some. I like to start afresh as well (kind of like rebuilding a PC every now and then). Could be me being picky as well lol.

I know what you mean but I wouldn't want to rebuild a PC as often as I reflash the firmware! I have everything on phone memory so maybe that helps but I will probably do a fresh install if/when the next update comes along

Don't worry, I'm not that picky, I don't rebuild my PC anywhere near as often as the phone, I hate rebuilding PCs (at home anyway, at work it's just a reimage!) pain in the arse lol. It does take a bit of time resetting up the phone, not toooo bad though. It passes the time on the train to and from work.
How weird. Same phone, sounds like same job (I'm a network analyst but do a fair bit of helpdesk stuff too) and both rail commuters 😊

Nope, make that four!😃 Although, no public transport for me😉
