Upgraded to V20 - cannot get my calendar back

18 replies · 5,011 views · Started 26 November 2007

OK, before upgrading to V20, I did a PC suite content copier and also a backup to my memory card.

Did the upgrade and restored everything but my calendar didn't come back.

Restored from the memory card backup and that didn't restore it either.

Tried to sync with my PC to get them all again by doing a full resync and that said 'unable to open database' on the phone.

Help!!!!!!

This happened to me as well 😡

Has anyone found a solution ?

I've tried restoring from a backup on my memory card and from my pc. Both APPEAR to restore successfully but then the calendar is still empty when the phone restarts 😡

The calendar does not work?
Thanks for pointing this out, I'm going to wait for more info here😊

Have just tried re-installing the firmware and ensuring that restoring the calendar is the first thing i try - still no luck 😡

Is anybody else having this problem ? I wont be happy if this means ive now "lost" all my calendar entries

looks like its just us two with this problem then ?!?

I've now even tried installing different product code versions of firmware 20 (more in desperation then anything) and still no luck :frown:

help...please...someone !?!

you guys did not sync the calendar with outlook right?
That might have worked, but is to late now

hmm strange, i backed up my settings before flashing and my calendar restored fine. i must be the only one

Correct, i didnt have the calendar synced with outlook and yes it is now too late 😡

I haven't lost the calendar info completely as i've opened the backup files in word and can see it all there (amongst other random characters) but need a way to get it all back onto the phone 😡

Im getting there 😊 sadly theres no sign of a nice young girl in the solution though 😡

I've worked out that with a little bit of work it is possible to get the backup of the calendar to open in sunbird (the mozilla calendar program for those who dont know). Now, seeing as nokia dont offer a sync option with sunbird, i just need to work out how to move from there to outlook... :con?

Cracked it !

for those who are interested/having the same problem and are REALLY desperate to get their calendar back heres what i done

Open the NPS backup file in word/notepad/other misc text editor and scroll down until you find something like:

םםםםםם\םםםBEGIN:VCALENDAR
VERSION:1.0
BEGIN:VEVENT
UID:01092007203747295875-0
SUMMARY:FA Cup final
DTSTART:20060512T230000Z
DTEND:20060513T230000Z
X-EPOCAGENDAENTRYTYPE:EVENT
CLASS:PRIVATE
SEQUENCE:0
X-METHOD:NONE
LAST-MODIFIED:20060512T190300Z
PRIORITY:0
STATUS:NEEDS ACTION
X-SYMBIAN-LUID:20
END:VEVENT
END:VCALENDAR

repeated a LOT times (probably best to just use search for "BEGIN:VCALENDAR
" to track it down!)

Each time that block of text appears represents an entry in the calendar

Select ALL of those blocks of text and copy them into a blank document.

Save the document as a .ics file i.e calendar.ics

Then you need to remove any characters that appear before BEGIN:VCALENDAR EVERY time BEGIN:VCALENDAR appears (hope that makes sense.) essentially םםםםםם\םםםBEGIN:VCALENDAR should become just BEGIN:VCALENDAR at the start of EVERY calendar entry. Once thats done, save again.

You should now be able to import the file into sunbird which will prove you have a valid .ics calendar file and you'l be able to see all you appointments again. This step isnt 100% necessary, its just in case you need to check any appointments immediately!

ABC Amber iCalender converter can then convert the .ics file into either something Outlook will understand to be able to import it or, in the unregistered version, a .csv file which outlook will also understand. Import either into outlook, check that the imports are correct (i found some of my appointments had taken to spanning two days rather then the one i originally planned!) and once the calendar in outlook is correct its time to sync.

Lesson learnt - NEVER rely on nokia's backup software to successfully back stuff up. I'l now be keeping my calendar synced with outlook at home at all times AND backing outlook up to a .pst file on a regular basis as i dnt ever want to go through that hassle again.

Thank you and goodnight !!

Excellent answer there Mamoo, and well beyond my level of expertise.

I use Outlook religiously and have always restored from there. I've noted that whenever I backup the phone PC Suite always generates an error that the calendar couldn't be saved successfully. I do wonder what is going on when a phone with the latest firmware and the latest version of PC Suite STILL doesn't backup properly - this has been going on for as long as I can remember.

Also, no matter what, I can't get repeating appointments to restore (in this case, my shift pattern) so I have to enter it by hand on the phone after every firmware upgrade.

Annoying, Nokia, annoying!

Based on the fact that the calendar wouldnt manually import into sunbird without some editing i'm assuming that there's something (a bug maybe) in v12 firmware that means the calendar isnt strictly either ical or vcal format.

This (bug) has probably been fixed in v20 so that the phone uses strict ical/vcal standard but now, seemingly, cant understand the format used in v12. The only thing that makes me think this isnt the case is that not many others have reported the issue. Then again maybe everyone else has been syncing with outlook all along and not relied on the (not to be trusted) nokia software.

just hope that makes some sense to you !

its a VERY awkward process and one that, if my theory of why this happened in the first place is right, we should never have had to go through but i think its certainly lesson learnt - dont trust the nokia backup thing !
