3G <-> 3.5G Pauses?

Hi

Just wondering if anyone else gets pauses when the phone switches between 3g and 3.5g? I tried downloading a song on the train home last night, and the phone constantly flicks between the two, each time it pauses for up to a minute before continuing to download. Ment I could only get 1 song in a 30 min train journey!

Is this ment to happen?

I don't see this. I often download podcast episodes on my train journey home and that includes multiple changes between 3.5G, 3G and GPRS signal patches, obviously the speed changes but it never stops

I'll see if it does it again tonight, and if it does, give Orange a call.

I am on Orange and during my visits to london I found the same problem. When you are in a fix position with HSDPA reception it is fine and lightning quick but if it has to switch to and from HSDPA it almost doesnt work. Its the same as when it switches between GSM and WCDMA. Its far from seamless. You should have the option to fix GSM, WCDMA and HSDPA I think

As an additional not I emailed Orange about the UK rollout of HSDPA. In my region there is HSDPA available with Vodafone and 3. Orange indicated that the HSDPA in London is meant for business users only and the rollout across the rest of the UK will happen between 2008 and 2009, seems a little slow compared to others me thinks!!

What a load of BS! I get HSDPA at work (London), all the towns on my train route home and at home in Bedford (mis-size town). Most reasonable size towns and above have HSDPA coverage for me. Perhaps T-mobile are ahead of the game on this one

I'd agree that it does orange doesnt have HSDPA outside london, I live liitterally just outside and as soon as go over the M25 your lucky to get a decent 3g signal.

Although when you do get and hsdpa signal, its is really quick.

I'm amazed Orange have ANY HSDPA capabilities!

Still, it's not unreasonable to expect small pauses as the phone has to switch modes when alternating between 3G and 3.5G. Having said that, I'd blame Orange first and the phone second.

Well my phone is t-mobile and doesn't have any visible pausing so I wouldn't blame the phone at all

It can alternate every few seconds on some parts of the line, this might be the cause. Although I'd have though coverage would be slightly better than that in London.

Orange do seem to be slacking on the mobile front recently, all the articles on new mobile services always seem to be Vodafone or T-Mobile.

Happens to me. I'm on Vodafone and, as a rule, if I have 3G I can get HSDPA but there's an area of my local café where the signal seems weak and whilst I get full strength 3G the phone constantly slips between that and 3.5G, causing quite long delays.

It's a shame because this is my favourite seat in the café but also good since I live in such a far flung limb of the country I consider myself lucky to have an inside toilet, never mind any sort of HSDPA coverage.

Where I live Im lucky to even get a GPRS signal at all, even though the entire area is ment to be 3G, I live at the bottom of a hill, and literally, I can go 100 yards up the road and get a full 3g signal!
