NMS Unable to acquire licence N95 ?

8 replies · 4,322 views · Started 30 November 2007

I am logging into the NMS from my upgraded N95 and can see the tracks I previously bought and downloaded to my PC.

Can download these tracks over air onto the N95 but when I try to play them in N95 Music player. I get the following messages
"Unable to play. Licence invalid. Get licence over the air ?" I select Yes. Then connecting then logging into NMS. "Requesting Licence" then "Acquiring licence" then "Unable to acquire licence". I have repeated several times for several tracks and over both Wifi and 3.5G but always the same.

"Unable to acquire licence"

Why can I not obtain the licence for tracks I have bought and can play on my PC in NMS ?

Did anyone get an answer to this? Or did jpwbamber realise an obvious answer but didn't share? I seem to have the same thing now except in my case, I bought and downloaded an album for £8 with an N81 some months ago, which subsequently worked well and I could play on the device. Now, I re-download the album to my N95 8GB and I get the same messages as he did. All I get is the chance to 'buy' the licence for this track which looks like I have to pay again. I thought that one of the big advantages of the NMS was that once paid for you can re-download again and again. Or does this mean to a PC but only once to a mobile device?

Have tried to search for the answer.

No I have not had any reply or any clue why I cannot get the licence.

I presumed this was due to my phone being an N95 classic.

Am interested to hear that the same has occured with N95 8GB.

Yes - it seems like all devices. I'm hoping that it's a fundamental misunderstanding on my part about how it works!

I've started ploughing through the support documents at NMS and it sems that when you download something you get 'at least' three 'licences' to move the files to another device. What's confusing, though, is that it also says that this is renewable but it then seems clear that by 'renewable' it means that you can buy it again! I'm still looking through to try and understand the DRM stuff and licence stuff but it is really not very clear. One down for Nokia, I think.

I'm very happy to do all this stuff legally but it's no wonder people go the 'free' route where they can get away with it, as it seems so unfair to me that I can buy an album from NMS and listen to it but if I change my device (three times? or does one download include the one to your PC?), that's it, gone. Maybe they assume that you're giving it away to someone else if you sell a device?

I was labouring under the misapprehension that this was one way in which Nokia had 'got one over' on iTunes, but it seems not.

I'm still researching though!

I've given up with NMC for just this reason. I bought some tracks, downloaded to my PC with a view to put them on my N95 and then got the licence problem. Mailed support, got bog all assistance over and above "buy again" and vowed never to buy a track from them again.

Yes - it seems strange and not very well thought out. Which is odd, I think. I'm sure someone's lurking here who has the (probably simple) answer..?

I get the same problem on my n82, even on new tracks i download, after i switched to an 8gb memory card. I try occasionally downloading the free one they do every week, it fails acquiring the licence and brings me to a web page saying "MDS Error" There has been a problem trying to play the requested track. This could be due to a problem with your memory card or the license

Does it fail with 8gb cards?

I'm just going to buy mp3s from play.com now. Hassle free, high quality and cheap as chips compared to nokia.

I tend to agree, bugmenot. I downloaded a track from play.com recently and it was very smooth and I can play it on any device I fancy. None of this controlled rubbish.

I don't have an N Series device that has a card slot, I'm afraid, so can't test that 8GB card theory. Perhaps someone else?

I have now updated to an N82 black and all now works OK, still no luck with N95. With N82 can redownload previously purchased music and purchase new tracks.

Hoorah.

I am using the 2GB memory card that came with the phone.
