The display never shows the message 'fully charged' no matter how long the the damn thing is charging.
Yesterday the phone fell from having about 4 bars to nothing and dying during a one hour car journey.
Is this a faulty phone or faulty battery?
I hope it's just a dud battery - at least that's easy to resolve.

Sounds very much like you've got a dead battery to me. That's pretty standard behavior for dead Lithium Ion types.
if the battery is dead, it wouldn't work at all would it?
Are you charging it with the wall charger or through a usb port? I know usb ports dont provide enough current to fully charge the phone and wont display that message.
If its wall, then dud battery by the sounds of it.
Using the wall charger that came in the box. Have installed Energy Profiler to monitor battery usage.
If this carries on, I'll try getting a new battery.

Battery life seemed normal and steady.
Switched to silent over night and this morning...dead phone.😡
It was in silent mode last time it died as well.
Recharged this morning and Mail For Exchange has died.
Re-installing and synching at the moment.
This is not the indication of a dodgy battery
