Help me decide! N95 or N95 8GB

53 replies · 10,834 views · Started 02 December 2007

So after this update I'm undecided. My T-mobile contract has come to an end and I want to renew it to get a cheap rate. My question is should I wait for the N95 8GB in the new year or get the N95. I heard there is a way to change the product code in order to allow the update to take place. So what should I do?

just look at the pro's and con's:

n95: cam shutter, card slot, memory cards upto 8gb (at the mo, 16gb next), fast read and write time to mem card via usb reader (5mb per second with 6gb and 8gb cards), slightly smaler then the 8gb in terms of size, available in 3 dif colors, all bugs fixed, few minor bugs remain.

n95 8gb: 0.2" bigger screen, black in color, transfer rate via usb is 1mb per second, bigger battery capacity, more RAM (even tho the n95 classic has had a new fw update), altho the 95mb free RAM isnt needed, around 50mb wud do, no cam shutter, no card slot, screen is nice but isnt as crisp as the smaler screen on the classic, and fw still has quite a few bugs (these will get sortet tho)

so it all boils down to what YOU want/need from the device, but saying all this, id wait abit if u can as the n82 is due out that has all the good of both n95s rolled into 1 device

are too small .. if you do a bunch of texting .. N95-1 would be my choice. Save some money over the N95-8G and get an 8G card

the 82 does have xenon flash if you need if for photography. still no optical zoom though.

Thanks for the reply. I currently have a very battered N70 but I want the phone for photos, music and definitely 3G internet (as I use web and walk all the time.).

thats true about the buttons, if u dnt want small buttons then id get the n95 classic + 8gb card

id just go with the n95 classic then as ur in desperation of a new handset lol, altho once u get it u cud realy do with updating the firmware to the latest generic version to use it at its full potential

Me too.. with the v20 firmware and the fact that the Classic can be purchased for much less money, the N95-1 is, IMHO, a better choice.

i agree with that statement

But if I get it on upgrade, will it really be that much more expensive?

yes it will as the n95 8gb will be "new" to t-mo, thats even if they get it, u mite still have to pay a small amount to get the classic n95 on upgrade as the full upgrade price is around 260, but u get ur loyalty reward, the max is 230 they give i think, they mite give it you for free tho, it depends who u talk to

Not sure I can live with the smaller screen again having had a slider, though.

Not seen the N82 before, quickly off topic but does it do evrything the N95 does but in a smaller case? 😊

you have a candy bar format so less screen room = smaller screen .. it will plug into a large screen just like the N95 thought .. it has one positive thing going for it .. the inclusion of a real flash (xenon) for taking better night shots.

In my opinion is "ok" just not a "great" phone .. the N95 classic is a better buy.

Cheers 😊

Go with the N95-1, change the code, update to the awesome v.20 FW and wait for the price-gouging of the 95-8 to end before buying in say Spring 2008.

I got offered 180 pounds worth of calls and texts and web and walk for 35 pounds a month and the N95 for 20 quid. Is that good?

My biggest concern is the battery life. I want to use my phone a LOT for surfing the web amongst other things. I only need it to get through one day of heavy usage before I charge it. Will I be able to do that?

yes thats a good deal, and with the new v20 firmware the battery life is great, cant go wrong with the classic now its fixed

Ok may well get that tomorrow then! Any tips on changing the product code then updating the firmware so I don't get the shitty branding?

3shirts just wrote a few nice guides detailing the changing product code, and updating firmware. I think they have been stickied now, so have a look at the top of the 1st page.

Enjoy the n95!! I got the 8gb version, but to be honest i don't think there is too much difference in them now that the new classic firmware is out.

I'm still having a think. I've been researching it for a while but I could never get a phone other than a nokia. If T-mobile got the N95 8GB in February then it would probably be worth me waiting a couple of months because the contract is 18 months. If I bought the N95 I would still have to buy an 8GB for fifty quid and I'm not sure I want to do that (having already bought a card for my PSP a few weeks back.) Personally I think the N82 is a bit ugly and the buttons are pretty small. The N95/8GB appeals to me because the screen is big and clear for internet browsing. I'm so undecided!

I vote for the 8gb model. Just upgraded from O2 n73 to Vodafone N85 black 8gb and it is excellent.

I looked at the N95 classic for a couple of weeks and tried it a few times in the shops. Once I tried the 8gb that was it!

If you do buy the classic remember it is on an 18mth contract and is aleady "old" technology that has been surpassed by 8gb model.

Might regret buying it.

Also new fw voids the warranty.

seriously, what's the point with 8gb of memory and like over 100mb of unnecessary ram.
you don't sit with the phone as a mp3 player for that many hours, and you wont feel its comfortable to watch videos for so long.
and btw is the noise gone in 8gb version?
noise when you listen to music, watch videos, anything, its always a small small noise in the background loud enough to bother me listening in my headphones..
still there?

The 8GB is pretty much the same technology level as the N95-1 - they have all the same core logic. Since the RAM issue has been much improved with V20, the 8GB's remaining benefits are slightly better battery life (though as I've said before, if you think the N95-1's is much too short then the 8GB's is unlikely to change your mind) and the larger, better screen, at the cost of losing microSDHC expansion and the lens cover.

I grant the lens cover might be a problem going forward but the rest of the
8gb package is way better than the N95-1 IMHO. It's black, it's sleek and looks way better than the "plasticky" classic.

Just my observations.

I just got my new n95 delivered... it has the new firmware! 😊

what did you mean by 'change the code'?

He means change the product code to allow the firmware upgrade (see the sticky post) but since you have v20 firmware already, no need to bother 😊

Sure it would be nice to have a cardslot - but hey, do you use more than 8GB at any given time ?

And the extra screen trade for the lens shutter is a win-win.
I just DON'T understand why ANYONE (other than perhaps, someone with an Autistic Spectrum disorder) would prefer that gruesome lens shutter - when you can have a nice, glass lens cover that requires no input and doesn't trap dust particles on the lens underneath.

Err, lots do actually. In a vote on another N95 users site most people DO want a lens cover. Oh, and the lens isnt glass, its perspex.

I daresay most dont have Autistic Spectrum disorder.

In fact, it was 108 for a lens cover, and 10 against. Either way, its personal preferance. Not a medical condition if it doesnt match to your opinion.
