N95 on 3, debranded, msn live screwy

Hi All,

Ive taken my mates phone (an N95 RM-159, product code 546553), changed the product code to a EURO1 sand (534841) and then uploaded latest firmware (20.0.0.15 or something).

It was a 3 branded handset, delivered last week, on firmware 12.somethingbad.

The update has gone without a hitch.

access points were saved on the sim card. I can browse the web fine (but does have a warning website appear about data charges).

Ive installed MSN messenger from the nokia download utility, but it will not connect (he is @hotmail.com , ive seen various threads about @msn.com but this is NOT the issue). It has the error message about access points or network not configured propperly.

MSN (as provided by 3 i think) was working fine before hand, as the phone came out of the box.

Otherwise, phone is much better for the new firmware :P

Im guessing either the link to download MSN for the 3 handset is specially crafted to use different ports, OR, 3 are somehow blocking ports or other traffic management?

Any hints or tips are greatley received...

1 other question, i didnt actually check to see the latest firmware available for the original product code, but i bet its no where near 20!

I'm on Three, but I've never used their own MSN application.

I can tell you for sure though that without the Mobile Broadband add-on, their network is fully port-blocked and proxied. Like you say, I imagine their own MSN app has a way around that.

Doh, thats real nice...

told him he should have gone with vodafone, he went with 3 because it was about 4quid a month cheaper, but he'll soon find he needs the 5pound add on per month!

quite why he didnt go with vodaphone i dont know, i get 100mb per day allowance :P

I dont have the phone to hand, so cant try, but i read in another thread about removing the proxy settings on the internet access points, will bypass the 3 proxy and allow a few more things to work, but dont know if this is the case?

what i really need is someone with an un-messed-about-with N95 on 3, offload the MSN application, and stick it back on...Can anyone help me out?

Now i know i should have backed it up lol.... I wasnt expecting 3 to be lame, msn works fine on my E90 when downloaded via the download option...

Bump to the top...

Anyone with a N95 on '3' with working MSN i could do with a PM from so you can send me some files :P

I just had another thought... The download list must be product code dependant, so i could change the product code back to the old one, run the download once more, then switch it back for good measure... trouble is the phone is 20 miles away!

Cheers,

Hi ScottE90

If i was you i would check very carefully what you think you are getting from VodaFone as taken directly from their Website is this

Whether youre a Pay as you talk or a Pay monthly customer you can start exploring the Mobile Internet straight away on our daily rate. This normally costs no more than 1 per day.

From 0.5MB all the way to 15MB, which is more than enough for most users, you pay 1 per day.

If youd like the freedom to browse without a daily limit, try our 7.50 Web browsing pack. It gives you a huge 120MB monthly allowance, which should let you view 1000s of web pages, all your emails and loads of videos.

Get a massive 120MB per month
Revert to the 1 daily rate if you go over your monthly limit

and if you go over the 15mb per day limit youll be charged 2 for every extra MB you use. So if you are using more than 15mb per day or 120mb per month you could be looking at a monster bill.

The best Mobile Data deal is actually offered by T-Mobile starting at just 7.50pm for up to 1gb of phone only usage and slightly more expensive plans with greater allowances that allow you to use your device for everything. Both VODA and 02 have really bad Data deals as do 3 which depending on your device requires a Video add on package.

As for the original question unfortunately your friend is stuffed as 3 do use all their services via their own servers so he will not be able to access and use the non 3 supported versions with his 3 Sim.

Marc

The data deal is true!

Its 25quid/month add on, and is 3gb per month, very similar to the "3" usb dongles you see starting at 15quid/month for 1gig, i have a feeling im on a similar package? I phoned up to check , and yep, its 100mb per day. Not that ill ever use it, but it will be useful one day! Had a few bills yet, no data charges :P

I only phoned up to check, as i bought my E90 from a nokia store direct, and they sold it me with a vodaphone contract, and they recommended unlimited data plan, so i took it, then phoned to enquire how 'unlimted' lol.

As for my mate. DOH! I will see if removing proxy settings work, or hold out to obtain the original version of MSN as offered by 3 (next time he is round, ill try reverting the product code back, and re catalogue the downloads, and download).

3 is lame! vodafone for the win!

Well i tried a couple of things:

text "MSN" to a special mobile number on 3. Gives a link via sms to there site where you can download their version of MSN, but it gives me an error about certificates.

certificates are turned off etc, so dont see why this error is coming up.

Also, used NSS to put the product code back to what it was, but this made no difference to trying to install it.

getting annoyed now...

Ive used his 3 sim card in my unlocked E90, and it wont connect, so its deffo 3 blocking the network connect, and i need their software on the phone, but cant get it...

Anyone got an N95 on 3 who can send me some files?

Cheers,

Scott

I think the certificate error is becasue your unbranded handset doesn't have '3' certificates on it.

You can't downgrade firmware with the Nokia Software Updater. When/if '3' release v20 for their Product Code you will be able to reinstall - as it's a major upgrade, hopefully '3' will release it .

I presume only a nokia service center can reflash the firmware to a lower version?

Someone needs to come up with a hack for NSU to allow you to go back!

As for the certificates, are these just files i can copy from another 3 n95 to the device, in order to allow their MSN to install?

I need to sort this out, as ive nackered my mates phone to the extent he cant use MSN, which is all he bought the phone for. And to think he trusts me with the brakes on his car aswell LOL.

He's not keen on the extra 5 month option to unlock his ports either...

Can someone with a 3 branded n95 still on old firmware help me out?

hiya scotte90 i too did the same thing with my phone and had the same problem. but im now able to connect to msn.it seems to work 50% of the time 1st try and then 10% 2nd/3rd attempt to sign in. rest of the time not available.get your m8 to try it at different times of the day.

Just a suggestion to at least get your mate chatting...try downloading/using Fring, it is a skype / msn hybrid type of program

Did this problem actually get resolved? I've got a branded 3 phone, but I don't really want to lose the free use of MSN and Skype but updating the firmware and not being able to reinstall their version of these apps.

Cheers.

I sometimes use 3's version of skype on a generic n95 with no problems, as long as three or the iskoot gateway aren't broken. I haven't managed to grab three's version of messenger to give that a try so i'm using the one available from the Download menu, it probably counts towards my data usage.

Hi i updated the firmware on my n95 8gb and when i go to install msn live it says certificate error, anyway around this?

im on 3
