One of the disappointments with my N95 originally was that the uPNP appeared to be totally useless in that it didn't allow you to stream across the home network and play on the N95 itself, which many people seemed to agree was the only reason you'd want uPNP in the first place.
Well... this now seems to work in the way I want. You just go to home network, find the computer whose content you want to browse, open it up, select a track, Options - Play - On device. It then opens up music player and plays the track. This is EXACTLY what I wanted to do with the uPNP all along.
It continues playing the next track when it's finished, too.
*Looks at wireless phones with new interest*
I should have added, if it's not obvious, that you have to set the appropriate sharing options in Windows Media Player and faff about with any firewall nonsense.
Played with it and everything seems to be working, but in the content window is just searching.... for a long time and doesn't see anything.
What do I have to change in firewall settings?
Also do I have to check folders I wanna share as SHARED?
And the most important for me question - does it work only with built in mp3 player? Or can you stream a divx movie and play it using 3rd party player? That would be absolutely brilliant - no TV out in my laptop and I could use my phone to display the movie on the tv.
I'm using Windows Media Player 11. In options, library tab, configure sharing, settings; and I've checked the box that allows other devices to connect automatically. There are other ways of doing it, including Orb, and that naff home sharing app that Nokia want you to use that comes on the CD.
As far as your firewall is concerned, I think you'll have to figure that one out for yourself: I'm using Eset, which will be different from the built-in Windows one. Or just turn it off in XP security centre? Shouldn't be a problem if you've got a secure WLAN and a NAT firewall in the gateway.
Videos don't seem to work, I'm afraid, and it only shows music formats that it understands.

Correction: only seems to work with MP3s and non-DRM'd WMAs. I've got a load of AACs which it doesn't see.
That is good. I can by pass Media player and access music direct from a hard drive plugged into my router.
I can see all my files on my phone, but when i come to select one it opens up a small window saying "Select Device" and there are no options. It appears to be searching for a device, what is this doing though? And how can i get it to play the files from my PC?
Cheers so far for the info, i appreciate it! 😊
Go back to where you can see all the files. Now click the left menu "Options" and then the top option "Play > On Device" and it will work. I did what you did then read the OP again it was clear.
I already tried that, it brings up the music player keys, but they are grey'd out and nothing happens?! :S
Cheers for the answer
Balls, the second i clicked post it began playing. I nearly fell off my seat cos it made me jump, haha! Guess i wasn't being patient enough!!
thx
I was just about to say give it a bit of time to find it and load up 😊
Hmm... can you stream from TVersity to the N95, anyone tried?
(http://www.tversity.com - I use it for streaming to my Xbox360).
The supplied Home Media Server / SimpleCenter, updated, can't stream AACs either, but can do M4V, although, annoyingly, sorts them into alphabetical order.

This happened to me - I just left it searching making sure WMP11 was on and eventually the phone found my PC. Then, I went to sharing on WMP11 and a second device was there (the first being my PS3). I then allowed access in WMP to my phone.
The folders to share option on your phone is for when you want to see the phones content on your PC not the other way round so this isn't relevant in this situation.
Someone also mentioned about clicking on the option in WMP11 to let any device connect to the PC - I didn't need to do this and I would worry that if you do it could mean that anyone would be able to access your files?
hi i am new here, i haven't got the option to play on device, what am i doing wrong.

Have you updated to v20 firmware? If not, this is a good reason to do so IMO.
where do i get V20 from, i updated my nokia software updater this morning after reading the new firmware was out but it said i have the lastest installed. being 12.0.013 which i know isn't right.
hi all,
i know what u guyz are talkin bout but i haf no idea how to set dis up...
i hav v20 already can someone explain ohw i set tis up please?
much appreciated! 😊
go into Galley.
then home networking.
if you have allowed access to your media through orb or WMP11 then it should show up after the home networking section has refreshed.
the problem i have is i haven't debranded my phone. is it really worth doing it?
yea i went into gallery but i cant see any home networking...
😞
can someone teach me plzzzz

It's not in gallery any more since v20. Can't remember where it was as I've moved all my menus around. It's not hard to find: it's a little house with an aerial called "Home Media".
i have just updated will check this out.

Whoever can't find it, use the search from active standby and enter "Home Media".
Alternatively go to Menu>Tools>Connectivity>Home Media (position 4 in that menu).
done this last night and is slow to get going but when it does it's great, no skipping or anything
I agree that it's slow. Are people sure that it's streaming? The amount of time it takes makes me think that it's just copying the file across and playing it...
Is any of the other functionality working with Windows Media Player (or any other cheap/free media players)? Such as:
1) Being able to play media from the phone on the PC by browsing from the PC. I can see WMP shared library in the N95 browser, but not the N95 in WMP.
2) Being able to select a remote device on which to play music. WMP doesn't appear to be displayed when the N95 searches for such devices.
i think it's the way the n95 handles the stream, my PS3 picks out the same file a lot faster. might be something to do with processor speed.
anyone else getting a problem where the home media doesn't save thier wep/wpa key and keeps asking for it every damn time they try and access the server?
Look for it in the Access Point List!
