don't buy phones from ebay

50 replies · 10,033 views · Started 06 December 2007

so i bought used from ebay. it came 2 weeks ago, and when i tried to use it it asked for an unlock code at startup. i figured it was the standard 12345, but it wasn't. i emailed the guy i bought it from and he said it should be 12345. so i don't have the receipt, but can i still contact nokia and have them reset it? or am i doomed and wasted my money on an onion?
if i can't unlock it i might as well throw it out

Try turning it on while holding "green button" "3" and " #", hold them until you'll see the hands.
Maybe hard reset will help...

If not, just send it back and ask for refund. What's the problem? It's faulty. If it wasn't in description then you have every right...

If it's asking for an unlock code, search either this forum or use google - there are quite a few things you can do to reset that code. Some are quite complex, while others are as simple as installing a small application on the memory card. Gsmhosting has a bunch of posts about it in their bb5 section, will leave it up to you to find though.

Did you buy it using paypal? If so you have 500 worth of buyers protection. Make a claim with them and tell the seller you are doing so if you cannot resolve it.

Id say that 75% of phones on ebay are stolen/lost though, ive baught a dodgy one off there myself in the past.

Ive bought a fair few, and had no problems. However many people tend to go for the best offer, which is usually a very bad idea as far as phones are concerned.

Checking the feedback is a good start, to see if they have sold phones of that value before.

Yeah I got stung once (ended up having to give the police a statement as the seller was arrested for over £24k worth of fraud!). Never got anything back though cos she'd spent it. Legal system sucks but don't get me started.

There are probably many good bargain phones to be had on ebay but after that one, I'd probably just avoid it now. I generally only buy handsets when I get a new contract anyway.

mimosa, if your willing to give me the IMEI number of the phone I should be able to get you the security code of the phone.

Message me your IMEI number if you want me to get the code 😊

what do you mean.. i bought my from E-bay and I hope i have not bought a stolen phone. It was a new N95 in a sealed box, and its works perfect. But do you think it is a "falling of a truck" phone.... 😊

Well, not nice to support those guys, but how could i Know ,if it is the case...

The problem is that if it is stolen or off the back of a truck the person or company who have lost it will eventually realise and report it stolen at which point the imei will be blocked and, at best, you will have a duff phone. Worst case scenario, you might end up being questioned by the police as to where you go the phone (though you're unlikely to get in too much trouble as long as you took reasonable steps to establish it was genuine).

The Lock code is not for the sim its whats stored on the phone, if its on the sim just get a new sim card if its on the phone just do a hard reset and the phone will be formatted and the lock code will be gone.

Their are a few keys you hit at startup that will format the phone and remove the code.

Depends whare you got it from, which country. In the UK the IMEI is barred in the UK only by putting on the Central Equipment Identitiy Register (CEIR) that is shared by all the UK operators. I don't think this list is used abroad though.

Hi all,

There are two codes one is the Lock Code which is preset to 0000 the other is the Security Code which is preset to 12345 unless of course they have been changed or you have set up a pin code on your Sim card that you are now trying to use in this device.

Not trying to dis (horrible word!) anyone, but, giving out your IMEI number is a BAD idea!

I guess I've been lucky, bought both my N80 and N95 from eBay with no problems.

Check the feedback, you can usually get a 'feel' for the seller, a genuine unwanted upgrade that someone wants to make some money on is the way I've always gone.

Also ask for the delivery note / other paperwork from the airtime provider, a genuine seller will be happy to provide this.

As mentioned by forum user Rottie, performing a hard reset will reset the unlock code back to 12345.

1. Power off the phone.
2. Whilst Holding "green button" "3" and "*", power on the phone (note it's the star * button not the # button - rottie was mistaken)
3. Keep the three buttons held down until you'll see the Nokia Hands Animation.

If it doesn't work first time, your hand probably slipped off one of the three buttons - keep trying, it will work after a couple of shots.

Ok,this is either the best freaking deal that I've ever heard of or this is to good to be true.I just found someone locally who is selling a Nokia N95 8gb for $450!That's just insane!I'm assuming that it is probably stolen being that the price is ridiculous. But even if it is stolen, would that fall back on me?Or would I just have a stolen phone that I couldn't send into nokia for repair?Would I not be able to register the device online and or be able to put some applications on it?If there isn't really any repercussions for using it then should I do it.Need a little help on this one!I'm ready to do the deal right now,but any advice would be greatly appreciated.TIA

If the person who lost the phone reported it stolen, you may get a "failed to register sim" message meaning that they were on the same service provider as you.

How much did you pay for it?.. If there is a significant difference in price between the price you would pay in shops and the price you paid, then no doubt that its a stolen device. A brand new device on ebay shouldn't be much different to what you would pay with an on line retailer.

If it turns out it is stolen, then I hope you are never able to unlock the device. Harsh I know, but thieving shouldn't be encouraged.
You should be able to check by calling the police, who keep a registered lost of stolen IMEI numbers.

waxup

But other than that there aren't any repercussions? If that's the case then I'm gonna buy it today!lol. But I don't think that the're stolen from an individual.I think that they may be a "fell off the back of a truck"kinda deal!If that were the case, then would I have any problems.Maybe the're not real N95 8gbs!Maybe the're some some fake or knock-off versions. How would I be able to tell?I know what they look like(OS,form factor). But are there any other things I should look for?TIA

As long as they were not reported stolen you should be fine. I love those people who say "theiving is wrong etc" but everyone steals in some form or another, it's human nature. Society tells us it's wrong, the government and laws that govern each society have influenced us each in our own ways.

I am not experienced in knowing the difference between a knock off and a genuine n95, so I can't help you much there. I would assume it would have to do with the holographics on the battery and with the serial numbers on the device itself.

That's just it.I haven't bought it yet.And it's not off ebay.It's someone in my area selling it.And it's already unlocked.This is why I'm asking for advice.lol

If it's a personal friend, ask them simply for a receipt and the option to return it to them for your money back if you're not happy, just tell them, it's not because you don't trust them, it's that you are looking for a specific feature set.

If it is from a business, then you should have a return policy in place anyways and you'd have no reason not to buy it.

I say go for it, I know that is what you want to hear, you've already got your mind set on buying it and if I were you and didn't already have an n95, I'd buy it too. Good luck!

Remember, if it's too good to be true - it probably ain't true.

Yeah,it just may be too good to be true. It's a business and I have the physical address. But they want me to send a money order or money gram. And that doesn't sound safe or smart! They say that they have a 30 day money back return policy, but how can I be sure? They would have to ship it to me.So I think that I'm gonna have to pass.Which sucks! But I already have another seller lined up for Saturday. He's selling one for $670 but I can talk him down to $650.Which is still a good deal. And I'm gonna meet this guy in person. But it would have been nice to get one for $450.Oh well.I'm still going to get one either way!lol. It's the device I wanted before I got my Sprint Touch.I thought that it was too expensive, but I'm one of those buy a new device often kinda guys.lol.But I think that the N95 8gb could change that.I mean,it does everything!!So thank you for all the advice. But how could that place be selling them for so cheap?
