Hi there,
Just bought a N95 classic on Three with fw v.12. Haven't done much on it except order a 6Gb card for it 😊
Looking for some advice on best things to do with it - should I upgrade the firmware or not?
Any *essential* software? Browsers, sat nav, mail, etc? I ideally want VPN access to my exchange server and files on Win 2k3 server - is that possible over WiFi and "3"?
Thanks for your help - I'm new to the N95 but not to techie stuff or hardware in general 😉
Mate, all of your questions are already answered in first few pages of this forum, put some effort in it!!
You got yourself a great piece of kit! 😊
none of the 3 software will work if you upgrade your firmware.
Ive recently done this to a mates phone (gone from v12 to v20 firware by changing product code and running NSU), and his contract on 3 wont allow MSN messenger to communicate (as in the downlaod section). Have to use 3's software instead.
I tried to install MSN from 3's website (you text msn to a 12345 number type thing, and get a link via sms) but it wont install because of a certificates issue.
Can you do me a MASSIVE favour?! I need the certificate files from a V12 phone on 3, so i can try and install the 3 software to my mates phone lol.
infact, if you could do a full hardware reset, and then backup the entire phone contents to a zip file, and then host it somewhere, that would give me everything i need lol. OTherwise, jsut the .cer files (i believe they are .cer files).

Hey mate, I did some reading, hence the questions! A lot of people say v20 is good and some say its bad but I guess its probably better to wait for a Three release of it as I don't want to break functionality or void warranty.
Can anyone recomend sat nav software that runs with the internal gps?

ScottE90, I would be glad to help out - unfortunately, the Admin has disabled my PM and so I cannot read or send one.

You clearly haven't read much. There are complete reviews and discussions about all the available sat navs including those that use the internal GPS. As for the firmware, there is a sticky 'how to' guide which explains the warranty concerns as well as how to do it. Firmware 20 is better (the only complaints have come from people who have other issues and are blaming the firmware).
hey 3Shirts s think you should add an excuses list into the repetative questions list?? 😉

No, I have read all that - you have not read what I said - I know v20 is better generally for the phone but if your network functionality does not support it and other things break and there are warranty issues (which I have found from reading the posts) then there is not much point in rushing it, assuming it will be available in a reasonable time from Three.
A list with the best browser, best sat nav, etc as voted by the members would be really useful. Don't you think it would be a great sticky to have? Nice friendly welcome you have for new members here! 😉

Zed, yeah... it is a bit isnt it.
In extending the hand of friendship I can give you the following:
1. People are happy with the integrated browser on the whole now. Its wayyy better than it was been on pervious f/w and N- models. If anything else pops up, its Opera Mini which is good IMHO too.
2. RE the 'why didnt you search' comment from 3shirts, if you had you'd find this under the search term 'best sat nav' and this one under best sat nav so I think the comments were more directed at your sat nav question.
Have a look about the messages re demand paging in v20 thats a pretty fresh reason to update.
The forum has many many repetative questions which are found doing some looking.... and I dont mean a quick 2 second search, cant find it, so ask again.... because its those questions that make everyones searches harder...
Anyway....
:heeeellll welcome!
Yeah, I might have sounded a tad bitter there so I apologise. There are the same old questions coming up time and time again which is what I was commenting about but I may have come across rather abrasive so sorry for that

No probs! If they keep coming back, maybe another sticky would be in order? An essential guide to functionality and software on the N95? It would be good to have a *FEW* paragraphs on each topic like Sat Nav: 3-4 options with pros and cons like internal GPS support, etc.
its a bit of a personal choice for best sat nav, and best browser etc etc so would be hard to make it a worthy sticky. Plus, to give a valid opinion on 'best' implies that you have used them all... which again in sat nav terms is unlikely.
I get what your saying tho.
and ... just thinking about your *essential sw question* from the start, Im sure theres a thread somewhere on here asking what everyone found useful in terms of software... check it out. 😃
Zed, i dont have the phone to hand, but you recon you could email the .cer files to me? i dont know their location on the device, shouldnt be hard to find though, and shouldnt be too big or too many of them?
i can then upload them, and make them available to anyone who decides to break their mates phone!
can you email it through to zed {at} rover-resource {dot} co {dot} uk
Cheers,
Scott

No prob - I haven't even installed the PC software or tried the USB cable yet. I'll get them out of the box and have a go.
it would appear its more complex than i originally thought...
Ill get back to you when i know what im doing lol
