N80 settings difficulty

I just bought a used N80 from a store today. I was trying to get to the settings menu. I clicked on settings and the screen goes blank with just wallpaper and if you wait about 30 seconds the screen flashes back to where you can click on the settings menu and themes and all that other stuff. It also does that when I click the clock icon. Any idea how to fix this? I want to do a master reset but can't unless I get into the settings menu.

where do I have to go in the phone to put in the reset codes? Is it in the settings menu or is it supposed to work like if I were to try to type it in as a phone number?

I did the hard reset and now it says "Phone start-up failed. Contact the retailer." What should I do now?

Edit: I took out the sim and started it up, it worked that time so I put the sim back in and it worked. When the sim is out I can adjust settings, when the sim is in I still can't adjust any settings..

I am having the exact same issue after upgrading. I have tried everything so far with no fixes yet. As I mentioned in my post, everything was fine until I upgraded.

My nokia n75 does the same thing. I unbranded it and this is what happens. That other guy was right about putting it in offline mode. Here is a trick i use. Since i NEVER turn OFF my phone, i always want it to be on and running and only put it on silent when im sleeping or at the movies or at work.... I put it on offline mode and then open settings and exit settings. then put it in normal mode. now u can open settings all you want. What I'd like to know is does anyone know why this is happening? Nokia? phone gurus? I have an E62 Unlocked and it runs the same OS, but it does not exhibit these behaviours. Re-installing the firmware does not help. I like the N75 a little more because it has a 2 MP camera and the E62 has none. Serves me right for thinking that higher model number meant better device. I should have got the E61.

My unlocked N80 does the same thing, and I've ran into a few guys on this forum with the same problem as well. I don't think there is a permanent fix, but what you said about going in offline accessing the settings and coming back online does temporarly bypass the problem. I also have an unlocked E70, its never had any problems at all, except when I installed google maps and a few other apps, it overwrote my dictionary and left some apps unusable.

The shutter sound on my N80 continues to work and stop working, after I reset my phone it will start working again, but that's only a temporary fix. How weird. From what I read so far, there doesn't seem to be a solution to all these problems, upgrading seems like it might cause more. I guess we will be stuck with our buggy symbian phones until some genius comes up with a cure for these illnesses.
