Following on from another discussion, I was just wondering which people preffered.
A phone to have internal memory, like the N95 8GB, or to have expandable, like the classic N95 which can also have 8GB as those cards are currently for sale.
Note that Im aware many people would like both, but thats not the question.
IMO expandable memory is better, if you phone gets broken you can just whip out the memory, or if a bigger sd card comes out then you can just buy a new one.

Why would you want inbuilt memory over removable considering the wealth of available readers there are in laptops, computers, gaming consoles, other phones etc? I dont see the point of having an inbuilt block of memory. Sure its cool to have it so long as you can take some away also, but to not have the option of removable would make me not buy the phone.
Just last week there were many of us in a group together but in different places. We all took pictures of different things, yet at the end of the day the removable memory came out and all the pics were put together in a single place without any issue. Had we all had inbuilt then each one of us would have had to leave our phones to get the photos off, instead of just taking a card out and putting another one in.
I'd be happy for someone to sell me the benefits of inbuilt over removable though if they could 😊
While I agree with all you say, speed might be one. I not sure how fast the N95 8GB can read/write compared to a memory card. Obviously the card class takes part in it, but a comparision would be interesting.
yeah, I would be interested in a speed comparison, though I doubt over the long haul, a slightly quciker transfer speed would outsell removable?
I have never seen the benefit of built in memory, not in mobile/music/photo based devices. It is always quicker to read direct from a memory card and, as mentioned above, I want to be able to move the memory to a new device if mine breaks or get multiple/bigger memory cards as they come out.
The only benefit to internal memory would be capacity but since solid state hard drives seem to be barely ahead of microSD in that field, it's barely even a benefit, especially since you can't upgrade it later like you can with cards
Certainly not in my view, but then that depends what makes use of it.
Perhaps a (future) satnav program needs to be able to read/write to the memory faster for operation? Im sure theres other examples.
Of course the answer is to have both, x GB on board like the N95 8GB, but a memory card slot too. However, as nokia hasnt yet done both, Id like to see which is preffered. So far, its obvious.
I hope nokia is watching too.
both would be ideal, then you could have up to 16gb's on your device which would be Ipod range.

Oh c'mon.. By now everyone knows that Nokia isnt 'that "smart" ' to bring a 'perfect phone (N95+N95 8GB combined.)
The guys at Nokia 'know' what 'the perfect' smartphone of ths day&age should have.. They probably even have the 'prototype' sitting on one labwork bench in some faraway land.-Bit by bit they take out of 'its' concept,innovation,&technology and add abit to the new phones they seasonally bring out.
I can 'never' be satisfie with 'just' 8GB internal memory of the N95 8Gb ,,and definitely wont be satisfied with a 64MB max.RAM of the original N95.
So what then ?! , i go for the N82.. The N81 is NOT a stepforward in Nseries evolution..its more a static car painted up,given new spinners,and a surface(face) .. Though it'll definitely appeal to 'some' people - Nokia's Market Strategy at work.
We maynot get a 'perfect' smartphone yet.. (the smartphones of '08' will have 'something' -to keep consumers excited and Nokia's strategy going),, but i'll go for the 'ones' close to a perfect smartphone : The N82 -- yeah smaller 2.4" screen. But much better than being stuck with a static Memory 8GB.Especially when 8GB msdhc's are out.. 16GB 's definitely around the corner..

using the supplied USB with tne n95 8gb read/write speed is around 1mb per second, with my 6gb micro SDHC and the cerd reader the speed is aroung 6mb per second, thats a huge diference, takes 3-4 mins to drop 2 gb worth of music onto the sdhc card, takes almost 25 mins to drop the same amount onto the n95 8gb

Interesting - when I said speed, I was thinking of the time it takes the phone to read from it. Thus affecting programs etc. Difficult to get a speed on that I imagine.
Of course, I didnt think about the speed to another device. The N95 8GB is limited to USB cable or bluetooth (or, if you want to go uber slow, IR). Yet another downside to non removable memory. Good point.
