Connect wifi on school?

12 replies · 5,272 views · Started 11 December 2007

Hi. We have a wifi network on my school, where you have an individual login (username/password). Are there any way I can access such a network, with my wifi enabled nokia phone? Or is it only possible on my pc? Maybe some kind of software can do the trick? 😉
I have searched the internet for quite some time to find an answer But I havent found anything yet. I hope you can help me!

when you launch yoru browser, does it take you to a certain page for your school or does it just fail??

If not, find out what page your laptop goes to to log in, and redirect your N95 to go to that page as its homepage.. and then try log in.

DO you need to do anything special to connect your laptops??

Wirelessly posted (Sony Ericsson M600i: Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.0.6560/1724; en; U; ssr))

What a coincidence :i have a wifi network in my university too.. Its firewalled though (requiring username &password) ..being wondering hw2get past it..cuz people hardly use it ..(not many symbian oriented people here, probably 3% of total student population !)

Your school (like mine) will almost certainly be using a web proxy server. You need to configure the access point on the N95 (advanced settings) with the IP address of your schools proxy server and its port (usually 80)
Now when you connect to the schools wireless network you'll be asked for your username and pw and then you'll be able to access the net (assuming the school uses DHCP on their network)

Thanks for the answers! :icon14:
To kontraband: It dosen't have a browser login page. The login box looks (almost) like this.
To djneils98: How do i get the ip-address? And the exact proxy port, if its not 80?
Thanks in advance!

They may be using wireless access points that require you to add your phones MAC address to it's list to gave you access. The wireless network we have in the office has this and as soon as the phones MAC address was added and the SSID name was put in the phones setup it connected first time.

You mean MAC filtering ..
My school just has the browser login in page. Though they'll probably be using web proxy too.

Well, you could ask your schools IT technicians.
Another way (if it's not locked down via group policy) is to go on one of the schools pcs, open internet explorer, go to tools/internet options, then click the LAN settings button and IF the school are using a proxy its name and port should be there.
The N95 however won't allow a name for a proxy, only its IP address so then you'll have to do something like open a CMD window and type 'ping servername' (where 'servername' is the name of the proxy you found in IE) and then you should see the IP address of the proxy resolved by DNS.
Best ask the techs first I guess.....

Yeah, I'd echo that comment as it look like your proxied.. so follow the above suggestion. :icon14:

Well i know it's long time ago..
I still can't get it to work. Here is what i did:
First i used one of the school's Computers, and opened IE -> Internet settings -> LAN-settings and then got the proxy server address, and the port.
Then i entered CMD and typed "ping servername" and got an IP address (something like 10.64.0.1).
Then i used the WLAN Wizard on my phone. I entered the menu and chose "define access point" and it asks me for a password. I didn't know what to type, and just typed random numbers and pressed ok. Then it would let me access the Edit acces point menu. In that menu i entered options -> Advanced settings where it shows "Proxy server address" and "Proxy port number" I type in the DNS address and the port number, but when i try to connect it gives me an error message.

Hope you understand the procedure i went through... What do you think i did wrong?

My school's wifi prompts you for a username and password, but my 8gb worked fine the first time i used it. it was slower the first couple times i used it as compared to now. I go to california state university fresno

Have a look at Devicescape (.com) They have recently been advertising that they work with a lot of university networks and if your isn't one of them, they will add it. As a piece of software I find it invaluable for roaming different hotspots. It does all the legwork of logging in and really is so simple to use. It all happens in the background. I never pick individual wifi zones now, I just default to Devicescape as my AP and it does the rest. Brilliant and essential.

I second Devicescape. Before it, logging into my University was a pain EVERY time. Now all my settings are defaulted to Devicescape and I don't have to worry about ANYTHING. You can add your wifi, friends's wifis, or business wifis.
