File this one under 'Cool, but very early days', Nokia Beta Labs has released 'PC Phone', a Firefox extension for your PC that gives you access to your S60 smartphone and its calling, messaging and contacts functions. Comments welcome on what this might eventually turn into!
Read on in the full article.
I like how the installation ends with a button marked "finnish".
Why, yes! My phone is Finnish!
In all seriousness, this is a great improvement over using the PC suite to handle messages and contacts.
If they extend this to calendar as well, I'm ditching Outlook forthwith!

LOVE the idea behind this.
But the current implementation of it?
TERRIBLE.
Doesn't work on either my N95 OR my 6120c.
In both Firefox AND Internet Explorer.
All I get on each section is an error "ERROR: template CONTACT_LIST not found" or "ERROR: template CALL_LIST not found" or "ERROR: template SMS_LIST not found"
And when running, it makes the rest of my browser pages respond like treacle.
So for me that's:
Not working in FF with N95
Not working in IE with N95
Not working in FF with 6120c
Not working in IE with 6120c
Additionally, makes my browser slow as hell.
Oh well, great idea - but a LONG long way to go with it yet....
Right...
The Browser Plugin does absolutely NOTHING for me, as mentioned above.
HOWEVER, the actual 'tool' itself seems to work, in that if the phone is connected, I get a pop-up whenever I get a call or a text, and I can use the same pop-up to reply to texts via my PC.
Like I said though, the browser plugin won't work, so I can't manage contacts, or INITIATE a call or text.
Also, if you receive a text, and get a pop up, even if you reply using the PC, the phone will still list them as "new" unread texts mind you.
Would this work with the N810 browser....
Wirelessly posted (Sony Ericsson M600i: Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.0.6560/1724; en; U; ssr))
The concept it innovative.
But this is from Nokia betalabs - so assume it as 'beta' ,and expect the 'perfected' version soon.
downloading now -i will try it 2night and see how well it works for me.
No luck with my E61. Keep getting an "Can not authenticate the phone." error when I attempt to pair it via bluetooth.
I know it's not the laptop or phone, I can pair them fine with PC Suite and other programs. Hope they work out the kinks, was just thinking recently how nice it would be to SMS from my laptop instead.

.
In the instructions, it says:
Bluetooth or cable connectivity (only USB cable connection is supported with Series 60 phones)
So, Bluetooth will not work on S60 phones, you must use USB.
Furthermore, it says:
Only S60 3rd edition feature pack 1 phones (S60 3.1) with USB connection are supported (Bluetooth is not supported)
and E61 is therefore not supported, either, I think.
ETA: I've just installed it, and it seems to work in IE, but not Firefox; this is on XP.
- restarting Firefox after stopping the regular Nokia PC Suite seems to have cured that, too.
Its working fine here. I am using N95 and bluetooth.
So... as I understand this... the main diference between those two is the GUI? In first you use "system windows" and in the second you use browser windows? If yes: what is so inovative in this app!? You have been able to send messages and menage contacts from PCSuite for cauple of years...
Work for me. I have a N95-1 (firm 20.0) and work, connecting by cable and in both FF and IE
works well also in my collegue's E61, connected by bluetooth, but his phone takes more more time to complete the initial sincronization.
I installed this app and didn't feel I had a use for it then uninstalled it but now my bluetooth isn't working with PC Suite.
I know that this app doesn't work with Bluetooth but I didn't expect it to screw up my normal BT connection with PC Suite.
It says that the driver is missing... any ideas?
