i bought a p800 yesterday and i'm extremely disappointed that the software doesn't run on my computer as i'm using windows98se. is there any solution, how to overcome this problem? your help is highly appreciated.

Well the thing is that the PC suite for the P800 does not support Win98 or even Win98se, only Win2000 and newer.
Sorry about that dude.....maybe you could upgrade your operating system.

I am in the same situation - would like to buy the P800 but
do not want to upgrade my PC from Win98 to w2k.

I tried installing Symbian Connect 7, but apparently it uses the
com ports and not USB ports.... so I think this is a problem.

Thanks for the hint xenon. Unfortunately it really doesn't work with USB. However, it shouldn't be too difficult for SE to come up with a driver for Windows 98 SE.

That's such a shame, i was so hoping it would work 😞 For it to not work over USB seems really odd. I got this from the developers forum over at SE, make of it what you will:

"I simply install Symbian Connect by using the default values and click Continue until the installation has finished. I will then see the connectivity icon in the lower right corner of the screen. You can pop up an UI there to select which serial port or USB port to use. Please be aware you cannot have Symbian Connect installed on the same Windows account as where you have a P800 Connectivity Suite installed as these cannot coexist. Also any other Symbian connectivity suite of a Nokia Series 60,9210, Symbian ER5,ER6 SDK may interfere if you have one of these enabled on the same system. Symbian Connect is provided solely to P800 developers who need access to the full device file system. As a developer I have run it myself on W98,NT4 and W2K for at least a year, on serial and USB ports. It does not work with Windows 95."

Maybe I misinterpreted or the guy who wrote it might be wrong or something. Or perhaps it has extra options for those with the development verison of the phone. I hope they release something soon anyway.

i have win98 so i have the same problem...i called around and it is said that there is nothing to do about it so now i ordered an upgrade to winME...

I have a to old computer for winXP... 😞

Not very good SE!

since i didn't got it to work i had to send files via my IR cable and it only goes in 115k/s so everything takes so long time...:-?

Does anyone know how fast the dock station is that you get with the phone? :2gunfire:

so if i only have win98 PC and i don't want to upgrade, i can
never use the PC Suite to sync.

however, will I be able to send files to the P800 from the PC,
if say I have bluetooth enabled on my PC?

I guess I will have to make do without being able to backup
my P800, but how can I download apps to the P800?

Depends on your Bluetooth adaptor and software, but most should let you transfer files directly into the P800 and vice versa.

Would seem like a shame to miss out on synch-ing and backup though. I've upgraded to Windows ME (got an upgrade license from Dabs.com for 70 - approx USD100).

Though it does being me to another point. One of the reasons for choosing the P800 over a Pocket PC smartphone is to avoid the whole Microsoft licensing nightmare (constantly being forced to upgrade the OS at great expense and for little, if any, added benefit). Seems a shame that SE made a great move by going with Symbian for the P800 but then spoilt it by releasing software that only works with Win ME\2000 or above!

From a technical viewpoint, I can think of no good reason why software that works with ME would not work fine with 95\98\98SE. They are all just patches for their predecessor.
