Nokia N95 & E50 with integrated car Bluetooth systems

Hi there,

Just after some advice regarding my N95 and E50 in relation to handsfree Bluetooth usage and am hoping for some expertise beyond that of Nokia 😉

I have just put an order down for a brand new Seat Leon with the integrated Bluetooth kit that I have paid to have as a factory option. This incorporates, if you're not familiar with it, a Bluetooth sync with the car for making/receiving calls, controlled via the steering wheel, and also a rather neat integration of the phonebook contacts, missed, received & dialled calls, all controllable on the dashboard.

Since doing so it has come to my attention that neither of my phones, the N95 or the E50, will properly work with the car and that the phones will not synch phonebooks (though they will operate as normal handsfree kits, controllable from the phone). This is a big disappointment to me as I have spent a great deal of money on both the car and the phones only to find the Symbian phones are not supported. Is there any software I can use with the phone to make it work, official or not? Is an update being prepared as it seems to be a very common problem and a big disappointment to many customers. The Seat Leon (and most cars with integrated Bluetooth it seems) owning world is certainly craving something to be done about this.

I am also disaapointed to find that my old Nokia 6230i (that I have now given away in favour of keeping the N95) WOULD work perfectly with the kit. Is this an operating system issue with the Symbian software that the N95 and E50 run on? How can Nokia's entire range of latest phones be moving backwards from the previous generation?

I sent an email to this effect to Nokia today and received the following suitably wooly response:

Dear Rob,

Thank you for emailing Nokia Care.

In response to your enquiry, we have tested our phones with accessories manufactured by Nokia. As such, I am unable to confirm the compatibility and operability between Nokia products and third party manufactured products.

I would recommend that you explore the compatible car kits for Nokia N95 and E50.

The compatible car kits for Nokia N95 are as listed below:

1) Nokia Bluetooth Display Car Kit CK-15W.
2) Nokia Multimedia Car Kit CK-20W (you may use the supported handsfree mode).
3) Nokia Advanced Car Kit CK-7W (connection via bluetooth)

On the other hand, Nokia E50 is compatible with the following car kits:

1) Nokia Wireless Car Kit CK-1W.
2) Nokia Multimedia Car Kit CK-20W (you may use the supported handsfree and navigation modes).
3) Nokia Advanced Car Kit CK-7W (connection via bluetooth).

With regard to a software, please note that there aren't any available to enable the compatibility between Nokia products and third party manufactured products.

However, I will certainly forward your feedback to the relevant department for future consideration.

Kind regards,

Bhanu
Nokia Care

If anyone has any idea on a way around this, I would greatly appreciate any input.

Regards

Rob

hi im a tech for a certain vag group maufaturer and am familiar with the blutooth phone kits your n95 will work with the car but only as a headset you will not be able to access phonebook etc or dial out with the car controls (steering wheel) or voice control (if applicible) ie will have to use phone to answer calls, end calls, unless you have ordered advanced bluetooth car kit (remote sim )but i am unsure if seat do that kit i know audi do hope this helps

Dunno if its the same as for Audi, but I would think it is, apparently you need the 810 contacts download sis file and also the Q module for BT in the setup.... Cant confirm that works as my car isnt being delivered till March...

I can dial out ( well last dialled call ) using my car kit controls but cant access phone book.

It will work using the phone controls ( which is illegal ) but not with most of the radio dialling controls ( for some reason not )

have you tried installing this and then accessing the phonebook?

What car is it??

Its also dependant on the version of BT between car and phone.

Using the phone controls isn't illegal provided it's in a car cradle. The legislation states a hand held mobile communication device. In a cradle - not hand held. Floating around the passenger seat, you have to pick it up to use - hand held.

Had the training at work (I'm a copper) and that's what we were told. Be aware if using a phone in a car cradle affects your manner of driving there's still careless driving.

Hi again

I haven't received the car yet, so am only going by what I have been told on other forums and by Seat's own compatibility list so far. I have been told in the past that the software for the Nokia kit doesn't work with this particular setup either, but I will certainly try it.

There's only one type of Bluetooth available for Seat cars, so I'd imagine it's not the 'advanced' one that Audi do. I have seen it demonstrated and it's a really neat bit of kit, so I'm disappointed I won't have full use of it on my new car.

I was talking to another Seat dealer and he seemed to be (rightly or wrongly) under the impression that if your contacts are stored on the SIM and not the phone then it would work as long as it was in Remote SIM mode. Any ideas on this? I thought the problem was that the Symbian OS had built in security to prevent stuff like this being broadcast over BT or something.

Otherwise I may be tempted to try and recover my 6230i, to be honest!

Rob

Just found this post on a Seat related forum about this set up, maybe it might help us find a solution (there must be one!)

Based on experiences until now, it seems that the older the phone with bluetooth the better it works with Seat Bluetooth system. E.g. if you like Nokia phones and you want SIM phone book visible in the dash and ringing through car loudspeakers and no disconnection/reconnection of bluetooth with annoying "ta-daa" and break in your music listening, go get a phone model which is based on S40. The new S60 phones like Nokia N95, the connection breaks up after couple of minutes and then it starts breaking up/waking up every 15 seconds or so. And you can not get the phone book.

The phone book you can not get from these more advanced phones because they require 16 digit passcode for bluetooth pairing before they allow access to phonebook so that it is little bit more difficult for anyone to sneak your contacts.

I think Seat should provide such BT that the user can give the passcode in initial pairing of equipment instead of using silly preconfigured 4-digit passcode.

Does anyone know if there is possibility to change the length and contents of the passcode in Seat BT? Is there software update available for the radio/bt system of the car?

Alternatively, what phones could I maybe look at swapping my N95 that have a decent enough spec (I won't be using it ALL the time so I am loathe to move backwards with my phone just for the occasional use in my new car)?

Rob

Nokias S60 phones cannot transfer contacts (phone book) to BT car kits. (unless you have a Nokia car kit). There are many posts all over Internet about this issue.
At least I can make and receive calls, (Saab BT integrated phone and Nokia N95-8GB) but I cannot access the phone book nor the recent call list.

Nokia S60 phones can transfer contacts to the memory of BT car kits. I own a Peugeot 407 and I managed to transfer all my contacts to the integrated carkit by using following sequence:
In contacts, select Mark all,
Send Business Card
Via Bluetooth
etc...

It works perfectly...

I meant access the contacts in the Phone Book. I think the BT protocol is called PBAP (Phone Book Access) and is not supported by Symbian S60 phones. This thread has some information

http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/discussions/board/message?board.id=accessories&thread.id=3553&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

and there are several others in the Nokia support forums.

I come from a Windows Mobile phone and worked like a charm, so it was a nasty surprise Nokia Symbian phones dont support it.

yeah, the contacts can be accessed by the BT systems, but it works by pushing the contacts... rather than reading them real-time on the phone

Hello,
I took the advice on this thread and transferred my contacts as business cards to my BT kit, which worked great! I wanted to delete some contacts, and my dealer told me that to do this I have to delete my phone from my car kit, which also worked. But now I cant seem to import the business cards again. I get a message saying "Sending failed" on my phone. Does anyone know anything else about this?

Thanks
