Top 5 annoyances

49 replies · 8,117 views · Started 30 December 2007

wow - when i posted this topic i didn't realise it would stir people up so much! I did state that i think it's a fantastic phone and still do. It wasn't a 'moan' about the N95 as such just a few points about things that annoy me. Surely it's healthy to have a discussion about something without people taking it so personally. I wasn't attacking 'your' phone in anyway - just merely sharing my thoughts with this forum. It's interesting to hear what others think about their phone and discuss issues like this. For instance due to one reply I have now discovered Nokia Conversation. See - some good comes out of things like this. Anyway - happy new year to you all and I look forward to reading forum posts in 2008!

The problems with putting it in your pocket quite simply doesn't effect many of us that put our devices in good qaulity cases that no longer make any of these things problems. So no my slider doesn't open by itself nor does the camera open or the lens cover get scratched.

Same goes for the other alleged problems i have never hit the wrong key and ended what i am doing by accident and really fail to see how someone that uses their devcie without accuracy is suddenly Nokia's fault.

It's like those that complain they can't use the LED as a torch as nowhere does it claim to be a function of a Multimedia smart phone does it.

There really is no perfect device for everyone and doubt there ever will be but some seem to just like to find faults for the sake of it, what ever shortcomings there may be with our devcies they are outweighed by all the positives they bring and IMO if they really bother users that much maybe they should try and find a device that is free from these niggles and good luck with that.

OK, nobody say another word about Nokia phones.

That post is so absurd on so many levels and for so many different reasons, it's beyond my powers to know even where to begin ... not least due to a sneaking suspicion that it would be pointless doing so to someone able to post it anyway.
So I won't.

Dogmann wrote:Yet again as individuals what is good for some of us annoys others i would hate it if closing the slide ended the call and lets face it hitting the red button to end the call is hardly difficult or time consuming and IMO gives the user greater control not less.

Equally, sliding the slider down to end the call is not difficult or time consuming. I think for most, it makes sense that you open the slider to answer a call and you close it to end it. That's logical to me personally.

It was a feature on other Nokia slider phones and I dare say its been the same on other make sliders. It has always been a customisable option - you don't have to have it enabled.

This is the whole argument - why hasn't it been included, when it has been in the past? Just doesn't make any sense to me. As I pointed out previously, go do a Google search for 'N95 slider end call' and you'll see just how many people miss this feature.

Dogmann wrote:The problems with putting it in your pocket quite simply doesn't effect many of us that put our devices in good qaulity cases that no longer make any of these things problems. So no my slider doesn't open by itself nor does the camera open or the lens cover get scratched.

I have a case but it is not always feasable or practical to use the case all the time, hence I sometimes resort to putting the phone in my pocket.

As an aside, Nokia does not supply you with a case out of the box.

I have actually even managed to slide the camera lens cover open even when using a horizontal belt case, as the lens slide switch protrudes slightly and can get caught on the top of the case wall pushing it open.

Dogmann wrote:Same goes for the other alleged problems i have never hit the wrong key and ended what i am doing by accident and really fail to see how someone that uses their devcie without accuracy is suddenly Nokia's fault.

Quite obviously not everyone here is perfect like your good self 😉 I've hit the c button or media button by accident - I'm human. Its not Nokia's fault really, though they did design the button layout, which could be case for an argument.

I don't believe Nokia construct their phones always forgetting user friendliness and supporting 'accuracy' and 'professional' usage only.

Dogmann wrote:It's like those that complain they can't use the LED as a torch as nowhere does it claim to be a function of a Multimedia smart phone does it.

There really is no need to bring other topics of discussion that have little relevance but to bolster your argument. This issue, as you rightly insinuate is madness and I think most here would agree.

Dogmann wrote:There really is no perfect device for everyone and doubt there ever will be but some seem to just like to find faults for the sake of it, what ever shortcomings there may be with our devcies they are outweighed by all the positives they bring and IMO if they really bother users that much maybe they should try and find a device that is free from these niggles and good luck with that.

This paragraph is slighlty contradictive. On one hand you point out no device is perfect for everyone but on the other you're advising them to seek out a device that is.

Interesting.

Honestly, I don't believe the OP or anyone here has found faults for the sake of it. The 'niggles' that have been brought to light, are only really found through extensive use of the phone. Its not like some iPhone fanboy suddenly decided to try the N95 for five minutes then come and slag it off pointing out any unfounded issues.

Fact is, these issues or niggles for want of a better word exist and bother some folk. They may be something Nokia can address, and maybe some they can't. I don't see the point in people replying to this thread with the 'I don't have these issues so quit your moaning' attitude, they are benefitting nobody.

Just thought of a reason why Nokia might have left out the close slider to end call function. Unlike any of their other phones the N95 needs its slider open to give full sky view (hence reception) for the GPS, if you receive a call while using voice navigation or Sports Tracker you may not want to close the slider and risk dropping the GPS fix.

Could that be it perhaps?

Quite possibly, however on previous handsets the option to use the red end call button or close the slider existed.

Hi all,

Well i never thought my little post would cause so much outrage as it is only MO and the fact that i am somewhat amazed at the endless trivial complaints some seem so happy to make constantly. I never said anyone had to agree with my points but thought another perspective may offer some balance.

@Pheonix SZ

Sorry didn't realise that what ever you say we all have to agree with!! and hey they are MO opinions and as such are as valid as anyone else's no one has said you all have to agree with them or they have to be anyone else's either. If my post is so absurd why the need to re post it in whole when it was just two post's previous then ? and say you won't bother responding after doing just that if it really was of such little value or consequence why not just ignore it? or perhaps you like boosting your post count and showing us all just how superior and clever you aren't.

I also can't see any where in my post where i have said or claimed Nokia are perfect and deserve no criticism either have I?

I actually hate the new Multimedia Menu as opposed to the previous version but that doesn't mean i think my devcie is rubbish or that i should sell it or for that matter start a post saying just how terrible it is and what are Nokia doing and we should all campaign they change it back.

It appears to me that some if not agreed with take it as an affront to their fragile ego's and have to start attacking anyone that doesn't agree, my post just pointed out that what may be a problem for some isn't for others and considering the number of posts' in this thread you could hardly say this is how the majority of N95 or N95 8GB owners feel now could you.

Marc

things soonish ..

1. video - doesn't sync - sound properly at high resolution/night shot
2. video/still - I don't think they've got this nailed down - post-processing is not a good plan .. if you can't process on the fly then you're bound to introduce "issues" into the final result.
3. random calling to contact - when I haven't initiated any call. This wasn't the case in earlier firmware versions.
4. continuing lack of support for Japanese is a reason this phone is "good" but by no means the best.

Happy New Year! .. I'm going to reflash my phone just for the heck of it! 😊

dchky wrote:There is a 3rd party application that enables Japanese... Link was posted here last month: Engrish version: http://digilife.bz/eng/wiki/index.php?M-FEP60

off its arse provide Japanese support. They should begin by competing in the Japanese market - the N95 with a better screen would probably sell quite well. QVGA just doesn't cut it.

Thanks again .. I did read that .. haven't gotten around to trying it out ..

Competing in Japan would require Nokia to make phones that have it all and more several times a year. They are hard up making a handful of models per year as it is right across their entire price spectrum. It was a sad day going from the crisp screen resolution of the N80 to the N95. The latter looks blurry and cheap in comparison. Better phone overall though.

The N82, it's mostly just an N95 in a candy bar form factor, where's the innovation? SE do the same. I think Nokia is content with its position, spoon feed the public just a couple of new features each year, but never combine all features in to a single must have handset, spread them out so people have to buy more than one phone.

Dogmann wrote:I actually hate the new Multimedia Menu as opposed to the previous version but that doesn't mean i think my devcie is rubbish or that i should sell it or for that matter start a post saying just how terrible it is and what are Nokia doing and we should all campaign they change it back.

You're taking the context of posts to the extreme. With regards to this thread in particular, it never dawned on me after reading the OP's post that he thought:

- the N95 is rubbish
- he should sell it
- started the post to say how terrible the N95 is
- started a campaign to change things

I'm not sure where you pulled these from. This is a discussion forum. Discussion therefore takes place. This is a discussion just like any other. There were no bad intentions from the OP.

RE: Slider issue:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=N95+slider+end+call&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB😮fficial&client=firefox-a

Results 1 - 10 of about 276,000 for N95 slider end call. (0.28 seconds)

Its an issue shared by thousands. As an aside, this thread actually appears 5th in the results! Quite a few people have obviously viewed this thread 😉

@Logan1981

It may well of brought up that many results but not every one is about the slider issue and even if it was considering the N95 has been selling in the region of 1 million units per quarter just what percentage of users does that make then?

I never said that no one wanted it either all i pointed out was it is neither difficult or time consuming to hit the red end call button which it isn't, also if it is from an incoming call it auto disconnects when the call is ended so no need to do anything. So in reality it only effects calls that are made from the handset and again i will repeat just how hard or time consuming is pressing one button to end the call?

If it really bothers you and others that much why not E-Mail Nokia and ask them why it is like this and if they will change it in a future firmware update to have this option. The worst that can happen is they can tell you it won't be changed.

Samir is probably working on an app to do that 😊

Firstly, where have you pulled your sales figures facts from as I'd be interested in reading them.

Secondly, that equates to over a quarter of said sales figure. Factors to also consider are those that do not pipe up and say anything about said slider issue on the internet. For arguments sake lets say the number is between 25% and 50% well that's quite a lot by my reckonning.

I have never disagreed with your argument above, please don't start turning this into something it isn't.

Yes because huge companies like Nokia are in the habit of responding to individual users regarding their future plans for a product.

Give over.

Agreed.

@Logan1981

Well if you watched any of the Nokia recent events one of the VP mentions it is shipping 1 million units a quarter when he talks of the N95's success. So your maths is really way out as quarter million users is only 25% of 1 million which is one quarters sales. Just how long has the N95 been out now and how many millions has it sold ? so your 25% to 50% of users is just a joke. But no surprise there really as yet again as you see it as something important so we all have to agree with your superior intellect NOT.

No with this comment it proves exactly how little you know

"Yes because huge companies like Nokia are in the habit of responding to individual users regarding their future plans for a product.

As it is a well know fact that Nokia do indeed take notice of what there users say both in Forums and by Bloggers and also by E-Mail's they receive which is why they addressed the original N95 problems. So guess just for a change you don't know it all yet again, it's getting to be a bit of habit this now isn't it. Maybe for 2008 least said soonest mended may be a good ethos for you both.

So it appears that you and Pheonix SZ if not actually the same person make the perfect twiddle dumb and twiddle dumber and I'm sure the pair of you could start an argument in a room all by yourself. You really can't handle being wrong as i said in the other thread where it took a Mod to point out i never criticised the app despite all your hostility and accusations. I'm beginning to get the feeling I'm drawn into arguments with people that just want to argue for the sake of it so will now let you play all by your selves.

"Shipping" figures are not the same as "sales" figures.

The rest of your post, regarding the mathematics, just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. You can come back and explain it properly without ranting at me if you so wish.

You a betting man? Tell you what, lets place money on it shall we? I'll drop Nokia an e-mail asking them about the slider issue and whether it'll be addressed and let's see what the response is, if any.

Well done. Sign of a forumite losing his argument when he starts making accusations like your laughable me and Phoenix being one in the same. Ask a mod to check our IP addresses if you truly believe this to be the case.

As for Bart pointing out you never criticised the application, I explained that in the other post.

All you're doing here now is throwing your rattle out the pram because you were denied your right to reply in the other thread, due to Bart locking it.

I dont want to lock another thread, so please keep on topic, with no more arguing. This goes for everyone.
